Maybe Science Needs More Fiction.

Most fans of science will tell you that Carl Sagan was one of the most remarkable scientists of the 20th century. His greatness lied not in his discoveries or breakthroughs but is his creativity and his ability to communicate science to others. He wrote several books, among them a science fiction novel. Carl Sagan's novel, Contact, is by no means a masterpiece. However, it is a perfectly enjoyable piece of fiction. I have read it numerous times. There are several notable things…

A memory that haunts me...

When I was 15, my parents saved enough money to send their oldest son across the ocean to their place of origin: Macedonia.

I have many memories of that trip, good and bad and horrible. I remember only two horrible memories and lots and lots of the other kinds of memories.

I want to tell whoever is listening about the horrible one that bothers me today.

I was 15 and very naive. In the middle or last half of my trip, I decided to go alone somewhere…

Some very interesting topics TONIGHT on American Heathen

No doubt about it, it's been a fairly interesting week. Lots of things happening, but how do you REALLY make sense of it all? You won't find it from the corporate-shill talking heads on corporate radio - but you WILL find it from the crew of ShockNet Radio's American Heathen, which airs at 8 ET/5 PT TONIGHT! It's a three-hour extravaganza of news, analysis, commentary, comedy and discussion that focuses on what's…

Is there something wrong with people who do not use Facebook? Hardly!

Recent news stories have suggested that employers may be reluctant to hire people without a Facebook profile on the grounds that Facebook usage has become so common that not having an account is seen as somehow abnormal. This concern appears to have been compounded by a lurid report in a German…

The Battle for Zachary’s Brain III: Religion Rears its Ugly and Divisive Head (rev.)

“If God wants us to do a thing he should make his wishes sufficiently clear.  Sensible people will wait till he has done this before paying much attention to him.”

Samuel  Butler

“I cannot believe in a God who has neither humor nor common sense.”

W. Somerset Maugham

Followers of the riveting “Zachary’s Brain” series will remember that Zach is my 6-year-old stepson (7 this month) whose task of configuring the world – his…

Promoting Atheism - "It's the Marketing, Stupid!"

As atheists, it’s not generally in our nature to proselytize.  We get enough of that from the believers out there and, as we don’t care for the practice, we’re not much for doing unto others what they did to us.  Still, most of us I would suspect have a natural desire to see secularism and atheism advance in the face of the irrationality we too often see in our societies.  In 1992 when Bill Clinton was running for president, the catch-phrase of his campaign was: “It’s the economy, stupid!” …

Mormons in the space age

Recently Richard Dawkins tweeted about the Mars Rover landing:

Yes, America STILL manages to reach Mars, despite half the country preparing to elect a man who believes he'll get a planet when he dies

For anyone not sure of what he meant by getting a planet when you die, he was referring to the Mormon belief in "exaltation". I was unaware of this myself until fairly…
