The Tragic Irony of Human Extinction

When I wrote Mirror Reversal in 2007, Global Warming was still uncertain and actively debated. Now massive destruction and human depopulation is as certain as the sinking of the Titanic once the fifth lower compartment was breached by the razor-sharp spikes of the iceberg. As the head engineer said, “It’s a mathematical certainly.”

My son, Rickie, a long-distance trailer driver recently told me that when he spends a night at a gigantic truck stop in the Texas, there’re…

"An Atheist Reads the Torah" -- Why I Wrote It and Why You Might Want to Read It

(Several years ago, I undertook to read the Torah.  For specific reasons, see below.  But basically I wanted to find out, to my own satisfaction, just what it said, to the extent possible, given that it's such an ancient text that's been repeatedly copied and edited.

To rabbis, thus to most Jews, it is a repository of priceless wisdom.   I set out to find it.

What I found was both enlightening and disappointing. …

Jealousy deconstructed. As Dr. Hall mentioned in his review of Sex and God, jealousy is an important concept to understand. While we tend to think of jealousy as a single idea, it actually has many component parts. Once the parts are taken apart and examined, it becomes clear that jealousy is a cultural construct that can change and even disappear depending on how it is constructed. The myth is that jealousy is natural. That it is innate. That we are born with…

So the ladders CEO sent out this email...

The following email came to my husband this morning from 'The Ladders' CEO, he promptly unsubscribed, but now we know that 'magical thinking' is likely the reason they can't even seem to send him announcements that contain jobs in 'his' field, or even a close approximation... ladders indeed... rickety ones at best... Take a gander at this idiocy where within his little bubble, technology works like 'magic' and 'thus' equates with 'theos'!!!??? Is it any wonder…

I really hate Jesus.

Okay usually you get people that just like "historic Jesus" or think the concept is neat, or like the happy feel good hippy junk he preached about.

But no, I cannot stand Jesus, not at all.

Why is this?

Well it can be summed up as: He is an inconsistent, hypocritical, asshole.

Without getting too theologically involved, lets take the trinity, in which you believe "God" and "Jesus" (not their actual names but the most frequently used aliases the followers use when…

I'd Rather Be Lucky

Paul Kelly was my first football coach. Since he was a bit overweight with a stomach that would make a Sumo wrestler proud, we called him “Jelly Belly Kelly,” behind his back. Nevertheless, when it came to coaching football, he not only knew the game; he knew how to develop people. Of course, like any coach, he had a list of truisms he spouted regularly which we came to know by heart. One saying he particularly liked was ““Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

I… Continue

Another PhD Candidate Goes Over the Edge

“Here’s an object more of dread / Than aught the grave contains – A human form with reason fled / While wretched life remains.”

Abraham Lincoln, letter to Andrew Johnson, Sept. 6, 1846

A heavily armed man explodes a gas canister in a theater, then opens fire,  killing a dozen, wounding many more.  Again, Colorado and the nation are in shock.  The eternal gun debate, which Obama had been keeping quiet, explodes, four months before an election.  There’s…

Chick-Fil-A mess. The politicians are wrong

Is it me or has there been an extreme amount of hyperbole concerning a certain fast food restaurant that serves chicken sandwiches? I agree that there should be some discussion about the owner and his statements. The LGBT community and their supporters should not patronize this establishment for obvious reasons. All groups that support the equal rights of the gay community should raise their voices in protest. Any business that financially and vocally supports measures that limits the equal…

Journal of Human Sexuality Review

Reviewed and enjoyed by David S. Hall, Ph.D., publisher for Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality

As this Journal’s publisher, I receive many books and films to review. I tend to shy away from books and films about religion except in my role as an educator. I need to expose my students to the wider view of sexuality held by the world’s religions. When this book arrived from Dr. Ray, author of The God Virus, I took it on as a learning project. I am very glad I did.…

Criticism, where it is due, still has limits.

I often see people pointing out something that an atheist said wrong.  It is good that they are being corrected.  However there are some similar situations in which the atheist was doing the right thing, and I wanted to explore that.  [I’ll only be talking about criticisms of religion that are valid to someone’s actual beliefs, and some that just need to be…

I think religion is a problem, not just "people".

[This was in a response to someone who posted something about "religion is not the problem, people are."]

I would first like to thank you for doing your part to try to correct some of the ignorance of the general population.  You pointed out some errors that people make with their reasoning.  That was great.

I was wondering if we could agree about a few…
