July 2010 Blog Posts (168)

My dad died yesterday.

He collapsed at work. Probably a heart attack of some kind. I'll post again when I have more presence of mind to do so. That's all.

Why friendly atheists are important

I realized this while making friends in the chatroom - I've never made friends with another atheist before. I have several nonbelieving friends, including one outspoken atheist, but she and I aren't friends because of atheism. We're friends because of RPGs, and I learned about her worldview well after the fact.

In fact, even while she was discussing being an atheist, in her living room with three dogs, four cats, and our spouses, I didn't tell her I was, too. I couldn't relate to the… Continue

The Afterlife and Its Implications

According to Gallup, as of May 2007, 81% of Americans believe in heaven, and 69% of people believe in hell (http://www.gallup.com/poll/1690/Religion.aspx#2). Which is…

"Ought". Where I part ways with Objectivism.

August 16, 1998. First post to IOS discussion list. All "oughts" are
hypothetical.

Greetings-
I do not call myself an Objectivist (large "O"), because I differ on
a number of significant points. Rather, I call myself a Secular
Humanist, and at times a Freethinker. These are broader terms,
referring to larger sets, than Objectivist. All Objectivists qualify
as Secular Humanists, and all Humanists…

Neil deGrasse Tyson on god and science

I'd like to draw attention to the way he fields this question. He essentially says he's an atheist without saying he's an atheist. I think it's very non-confrontational without being apologetic. There's definitely something to be said for his sense of tact (which many of us, including myself, lack).

I like it, and I don't like that I like it. I know his answer is superior to anything I would have said. It's not disenfranchising, it doesn't point a finger and say "No, you're wrong". It… Continue

Countdown to Zero: Engaging, Illuminating, Powerful, Interesting, and Enlightening

Countdown to Zero, a documentary about the history of nuclear weapons, lays out the most non-sensationalized, perfectly rational argument for complete nuclear disarmament I have ever seen presented on screen or off. Many of the world’s nuclear experts show that the idea of safety behind a nuke is nothing more than a myth that requires faith.

TN Lt. Gov. calls Islam a cult. And what is Christianity exactly?

With mere days before the primary election and with early voting underway, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey is making controversial remarks about Islam. One could argue that he doesn't have a large Muslim constituency to offend, but that should not excuse a current public official from making degrading comments of questionable validity.

Ramsey was quoted by Talking Points Memo as having said, "Now, you could even argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it…

Might I suggest a blindfold?

Cross-posted from my blog.

Women are sexy. Confident women especially so. It is entirely understandable that men, seeing our awesome sexiness, are affected by it. Call it 'arousing lust' or 'temptation' or whatever you want, it's natural and it's not a big deal. Or at least, it shouldn't be. Throughout history though, women have been held to different standards

of dress and behavior… Continue

A big load off my shoulders

So today I was sitting at the dinner table with some close friends who are religious. We started talking about something about God, and they said, "Well, you don't believe in God anyway!" What surprised me the most is that they knew I was atheist. I had never told them. I never realized that they read most of my notes on Facebook or read my posts for that matter. When I asked them how that made them feel they said, "You're fun to hang out with, religion doesn't have to ruin that. Plus you never… Continue

UK Government caves to Vatican in legal dispute on the violation Universal Human Rights.

Pope to protected from legal challenge while on state visit to UK

Those Fucking Cowards.

What greater crime than raping children in their care, does that miserable cult have to commit in order to receive it's comeuppance as the stain on human dignity that it is?

I am not surprised but I am fucking angry.

Sovereign State of Mind

This is NOT a Christian Nation, neither is it a Muslim Nation nor a Jewish State. It is a REPUBLIC. And furthermore, just because one does not believe in a deity does NOT make one a Communist. I will neither pledge my allegiance to YOURS nor ANYONE elses deity of choice. For I hold supreme sovereignty over my mind and ...my fate. Do with yours whate'er ye will. -Lee
