The Problem With "The Leftovers"

When we think of irrational behavior, we naturally think of human beings first, of their ability to act based on belief rather than fact, to operate without regard to their own wellbeing or that of others they are charged with caring for or some other related behavioral anomaly.  However, what if there were an irrationality in the laws of physics and of nature, which allowed two percent of the world’s population to suddenly vanish, with the speed of throwing a light switch?  Babies from…

Article - The Good Works of the Church?

On the “Good Works” of the Church

Andy Hoke

Religious discussions and debates seem to rage as much in 2014 as in any other time. Those arguing against religion are regularly stalled when asked to respond to…

To Weave or Not to Weave? That is the question.

Controversial topics never made me hide my pen or computer. In fact, the more contentious the subject, the more I am inclined to include it my repertoire of taboo themes. However, there are some areas I only touch only with thick kid gloves. In the black community, any discussion of skin and hair can be a highly…

Who Are We To Thank If We Believe The Bible

Job 2:9-10. "Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity ? Curse God, and die. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What ? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil ? In all this did not Job sin with his lips".

Proverbs 16:4. "The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil".

Isaiah 45:7. "I form the light, and create darkness: I make…

The Divine Emotional Guilt Trip Of Suffering

"Well aren't you just a big boy!"

I'd just rang the door bell of the rather palatial corner lot's brick coated home a few seconds previous when I heard an elderly voice sounding rather enigmatic and enthusiastic,…

Perennial Philosophy

Before I get started, I'd like to say that this post actually got me banned from the ThinkAtheist forum because it gave some people the impression that I was proselytizing an "LSD God." That is entirely a misinterpretation of what I'm attempting to convey here. So, I must make it clear right from the get go that I'm not trying to sell anyone any specific concept or ideology. These are simply my opinions, and so you're welcome to think…

June One

I'm on my way to my parents house. I haven't seen my brother in two years and he just arrived at their house with his family. No one told me they were coming to Colorado. Maybe its best, had I known I would have taken time off work to spend with them, but I'm not sure that is what they would have wanted.

My family holds me at arms length, the crazy uncle that they think is trying to "spread" atheism. The funny thing is my brother is a rather intelligent man and not as prone to…

Profound Experiences and the Stretch of Calling it Divine

I have to admit I was a little nervous just before my son was born (on June 13th). I had been told by theists that they can actually see god in the eyes of a child, or that the experience itself would make a believer out of me. But I am open minded, an agnostic atheist. So I did not discount them immediately for implying that I might have to change my mind about the existence of god at this event and went into this knowing there was a possibility that they…

Me

I'm seldom here anymore, checking funny or interesting articles. I'm seldom here anymore in my life, so absent from the day to day affairs. I wax exuberant and full of life to withdrawn into my own little world. Perhaps I am one of those lonely internet narcissists who feels no one has or ever really understand who they are. That is offset by my doubt that I am not of the caliber of anyone who is capable of a single original thought. I am not Milton, Shakespeare, Kant. I am the parrot of…

Desperately Yours, Lucifer

Today's little blog entry is a deep one. It speaks to the effects of a religious upbringing on children's sexuality, focusing in particular on the children who don't receive the necessary confirmation within their flock and start looking for it anywhere they can.…

Is this a step toward reason?

I read this article in today's news and couldn't help but feel positive. Surely it isn't just another way of putting out the "Christian Message", at least I hope it isn't.

Local News Ohio physicist, minister debate existence of God

When a snail sheds its shell, it still remains a snail

When a snail sheds its shell, it still remains a snail -- Albert Einstein

Sreekanta Swamy (SS): Prof.Kumar, you call yourself a Hindu Brahmin but you seldom visit our Ganapathi temple and pray. I know you call yourself a Secular Humanist. But does this mean you are no longer a Hindu?

Me: My dear friend, the short answer is “No”. The long answer is: I was born a Hindu Brahmin. I still am one. What is …

Jesus Christ is King by Joshua Feuerstein

Direct quotes from Joshua Feuerstein:

I watched a video Jesus Christ is King. Here are some direct quotes:

“Evolution is not a science and never will be because it was never observed.”

“Evolution is just a theory.”

“Chaos can never produce order.”

“Everything works like a clock; it has order.”

The universe “had to be through Intelligent Design.”

“I can’t look at all that creation and say that it was an accident.”

“Creation has…

Criticism

I know the impact of criticism, I've known it all my life. It begins with my family who expects me to fit in, to think as they do, to do the things that they do, to remain silent because I say things they don't want to hear or read.

Sometimes the criticism is constructive, offering me a new frame of reference, pointing out a contradiction, exposing my biases and these are all valuable and important in my creative processes.

There is another kind of criticism that is less…
