I recently had a conversation (okay, an "interview") with a friend, who is a devout Christian, about my beliefs...which she did not know in full. Since I do not believe in God, I was admittedly anxious about responding. But luckily, she is also open-minded and intelligent. She wanted to understand how I can connect with and find value in the world despite living in a state of "godlessness." It ended up being a rewarding experience for both of us, so I thought I would share her questions and… Continue

I'm not sure if anyone here read it, but there was an essay over at First Things regarding the New Atheism. I posted the following in the comments. I thought you might like it.
I'm hardly surprised that a theist would prefer the agonized Atheism of Nietszche to that of Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, et al. But Nietszche had good… Continue

From "Atheist Climber" blog,
There seems to be a lot of confusion for people on what is a compelling argument, and what is just muddying the waters of debate. So often, when in discussions around the existence of gods, the yeasayer will turn to personal experiences of things… Continue

I have just got back from watching this film and it was incredible.
At last, a feature film from the atheist's viewpoint. This doesn't mean… Continue

Bill Donohue’s Catholic League has reacted to the sex abuse scandal surrounding the Catholic Church by blaming the scandal on homosexuality and attacking newspapers like the New York Times for covering the story. Last month, the organization ran an ad criticizing the paper for failing to recognize the “pedophilia crisis” is a “homosexual crisis” and Donohue has appeared on CNN to… Continue

My son, who turns five in a couple of weeks, rocks!
We were doing some yard work with my parents (who are religious) this past weekend, and I heard about the following conversation between him and my mother from my wife. Sadly I was not there to witness it.
We are tilling out some old sod from the side of my yard and he was "helping" by picking up clumps of sod and tossing them into a pile.
Son: Why does the grass stick together like that?
Grandma: Because that's… Continue

I had gone out to my new car to experiment with its iPod interface. After a few fits and starts with the controls, I found it to work very well indeed and that the sound quality coming through the speakers, while not at the utter, premium, state of the art level, was still very enjoyable and would be a plus on an anticipated eight-hour trip to North Carolina to watch and celebrate my daughter’s graduation from college.
Stepping out of my car, I turned to discover a car parked in my… Continue

April 26th has been designated Boobquake Day. Women and I presume amply busty men as well, are called to wear outfits which show off their cleavage. The less modest the better, since the goal is to actually create an earthquake with nothing more than bared breast. Read the rest of this Article

reports that "Scores of schoolgirls in the Afghan province of Kunduz have fallen ill over the past week..."
It is always the weak and the defenseless who end up shouldering the biggest burden of war. Demolition of schools and education centers and systematic eradication of teachers, academics and other professionals of liberal education has been a trait of the Islamic movements in Afghanistan. While Taliban can not… Continue

I frequently run into atheists who spout the politically correct dictum that we cannot KNOW there is no god; we see no evidence for one, so we believe that no gods exist — but we remain agnostic to the possiblity
because we have integrity and are openminded to true evidence, should it arise.
Well, I think that’s just bullsh*t coated with a
dressing of the fear of being accused of being an absolutist.
But the fact remains, we certainly CAN know, in every commonly… Continue

Excerpt: Atheist Pocket Debater
The Atheist Power Statement
"The Fact is, there is no scientific evidence for any god whatsoever. This is a strong and acceptable reason for non-belief. The world works exactly the way we would expect it to work, if there were no god. We have never witnessed a supreme being intervening and/or breaking the laws of nature for… Continue

Harry Taylor, 59, of Salford, UK, was prosecuted and bound over with a six month 'Anti Social Behavior Order' for putting up poseters in Liverpool Airport Prayer Rooms. One of the posters showed Islamic suicide bombers at the gates of paradise being told: "Stop, stop, we've run out of virgins."

The Freedom From Religion Foundation successfully sued and obtained an injunction against the Obama administration declaring a National Day of Prayer. (See the FFRF web site

I am not a scientist and don’t claim to be one either, for this could amount to an act of blasphemy (for lack of better word). Nor, is the guy in the video posted below who is callously and vainly attempting to shove religious text into the realm of science. For those who do not know him, his name is Dr. Zakir Naik, a medical doctor who now runs a non-profit organization by the name of Islamic Research… Continue

There is a fundamental humorlessness about fundamentalist religion that gives lie to the claim that God brings joy and atheism is bleak and dreary. I first experienced this shortly after high school, many years ago, when I ran into a friend on the campus of the local community college. This was a friend with whom I had shared many a laugh, a young man with a wry sense of the absurd and a sense of humor that was to be admired. On this day, he had his… Continue
