Sex and atheism: Greta Christina educates us

I continue to chafe at some of the so-called intellectuals on Free Thought Blogs continually referring to atheism as a "movement" and associating it with all these other causes that actual nonbelievers have every right to care about or not. I happen to think that supporting equal rights with no preference given to either gender is a positive thing, and this is why I have a reservations about feminism. I happen to think that a progressive view of politics is the best way to move society…

nystatin for vague symptoms

I saw an interesting 2001 study that showed a benefit of nystatin vs placebo, for people with presumed "Candida" symptoms.

The study subjects were selected from volunteers, because of their answers to 7 questions supposed to indicate a "Candida problem":

Have you, at any time in your life, taken ‘broad spectrum’ antibiotics?

Have you taken tetracycline or other broad spectrum antibiotics…

The Godfather of Reason makes you an offer you can't refuse...

Al Stefanelli's been a friend of mine for a couple of years now. He's very well-versed on many of the issues that are facing us today, and he does so from a perspective of REASON - it's why he's often referred to as The Godfather of Reason. Join Al at 8 ET/5 PT TONIGHT on ShockNet Radio for VOR: Insights, a half-hour of commentary that looks at how we need to be approaching what ails us today: …

It’s the Sub-Deduction Stupid: Scalia’s Thoughts on Absurdity and Gay Rights

http://northierthanthou.com/2013/03/30/its-the-sub-deduction-stupid-scalias-thoughts-on-absurdity-and-gay-rights/

Time was when Antonin Scalia seemed fairly dedicated to the pretense of Judicial restraint. These days he appears content to be known as a political lobbyist for the right wing echo chamber. We can see this in the increasing number of…

Let my people go!

“Men create the gods after their own image, not only with regard to their form but with regards to their mode of life.”

Aristotle

I have been hearing from people who have had to sit at Seders year after year, uncomfortably, stifling their inner thoughts about what nonsense this is, how tedious, what’s the point?  Early in her adulthood, my wife decided that THIS was the year she was going to stand up at a family Seder (with two rabbis present, mind you) and…

North Korea - Where Do We Go From Here?

It should be news to no one that North Korea has been upping the rhetoric in the past few weeks regarding its relationship (if you can call it that) with its neighbor to the south as well as with the United States.  Its new leader, Kim Jong Un, has been making increasingly belligerent war noises, starting with the launch of a three-stage rocket in December of 2012, followed by a test of a nuclear device in February of this year.  More recently North Korea severed all “hotline” communications…

Candida, dysbiosis, probiotics, prebiotics

For a long time, alternative medicine doctors have told patients they have a "Candida overgrowth", sometimes based on a stool test, sometimes only a guess based on various symptoms that an excess of Candida is supposed to cause.  And they diagnose "dysbiosis", meaning the microorganisms in the person's gut are of the wrong kind.  They prescribe probiotics, prebiotics - which are substances like inulin and fructooligosaccharides that (hopefully) primarily feed good bacteria - they prescribe…

The Untold History of Gay Marriage and Two-Spirits

The following piece was originally written for the NEIU Independent.

The film Two Spirits is a sad but empowering film about a hate crime committed against Freddie Martinez, a Two-Spirited transgendered Navajo youth in Colorado. 16-year-old Freddie was brutally killed by being repeatedly hit in the head with a large rock. Unlike the Matthew Shepherd case in Oct. of 1998, the Freddy Martinez case got little media…

Teaching Climate Change

The latest controversial subject to be or not to be taught in schools (k-12) is climate change. The controversy comes not so much as whether it's really happening or not, but how it may affect the psyche of the children (!). Learning that the earth may (is) be warming up abnormally fast, might shake up the little darlings. Heaven (excuse me) forbid!

If anything would shake up kids, it would be evolution. And isn't that particular subject the main reason private schools (religious)… Continue

I just suffered as much as any man could ever suffer...

I listened to 15 minutes of a recording of Timothy Keller's "sermon" called "A Reason For Living" and could take no more. Complete and utter lies and stupidity!!! Tolstoy, held in such high regard, is full of shit!!! Who are you to say such a thing, you may ask. I am nobody, but what I have to say is bigger than Tolstoy or even the great Timothy Keller!!!!

Who invented the spear? Who invented how to keep a fire going? Who…

Family and religion

Hi, how's this for irony? My sister the Jehova Witness posted on facebook a qoute from Thomas Paine. Given her history and knowing how her mind works or sometimes doesn't, I doubt that she shows who Paine was. The qoute was something about reason (logical), and she didn't know how it refutes her beliefs. Ah well, such is life. I saw the post on my phone at work and could reply soon enough. Later.
