The Bright Side of the Apocalypse

With Harold Camping back in the news by apologizing to us all for having unsuccessfully predicted the end of the world last year, it's time to recall those festive days. I enjoyed them as much as most people of non-faith, so I thought I'd contribute one of my pieces from back then.

Apparently, the end of the world is scheduled sooner than both of my readers have been thinking. Most of us, especially those of us…

The fight for Freedom and Liberty continues TONIGHT!

Elton John once sang that Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting - and the folks at ShockNet Radio's American Heathen (airing, as always, at 8 ET/5 PT TONIGHT) would certainly agree. What do they fight for? Freedom and Liberty for All - three hours of comedy, commentary, discussion and analysis from an Atheist-Libertarian POV. Try finding THAT on corporate radio!:…

The Parable of the Disc Jockey

Non-believers need parables too...here's one I posted on my blog http://richardcahill.net a few months ago.

A man had owned a seaside bar in a harbor town for many years. Most of those years had been prosperous; his bar's deck was the widest and his beer was the coldest and his waitresses the most nubile of any bar in the town. Tourists and locals alike flocked to his club to drink and…

Religion…Enough With This S***! (…or, “You People Taking This Way Too Seriously!”), Part 1

"With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil — that takes religion."

--Steven Weinberg

As an agnostic, I have to admit that I have no way of putting myself in the cultural shoes or the socialized mindsets of individuals so obsessed with, and so fanatically devoted to their religious beliefs that they often engage in behavior which—contradictorily—turns the very precepts of their beliefs on their heads. The only…

... And I'm back!

Been away for a while-- life got complicated, and I just got out of the habit of checking here. The constant emails from group discussions kept this place in my thoughts, however, and now that I've got some things stabilized in my life I think I will be active here again.

I have found recently that one of my biggest sources of support, a group of online friends I am very close to, is not the best environment for discussing the things this site was made for. There are a couple of… Continue

I Smell Crapweasles

Proving the Poobah’s posts are prescient, it’s seems the threat to smite the Mormons over posthumous baptisms caused them to collapse into mint jelly and quash the practice.

Maybe.

After the recent string of religious recycling, the…

National Atheist Party's Atheist Voters Campaign

The National Atheist Party is in the middle of their Atheist Voters Campaign. In a push to call awareness to a large secular voting group The National Atheist Party has been encouraging its members and atheists in general to challenge their local politicians and political candidates with the question "What will you do for atheist voters?"

The Party has gotten video response from Ron Paul,…

Attending the Reason Rally

Pro

As a Canadian stand with Americans that want to show their country and the world that there are a lot of moral, friendly people who do not accept religion and believe that good government can come from non religious people as well as religious people.

Help form a political constituency - because standing alone we get forced to accept backwards encroachments in education and social policy.

Make a principled stand and put my money where my mouth is.  My wife is very…

3 Men make a tiger

The Chinese culture has many phrases and sayings.  The term for these phrases is called "chengyu" and the Chinese have about 5000 of them.  Americans also use phrases, or expressions, to help describe an action (Point of no Return, Burning Bridges). One of my favorite Chinese chengyus is "Three men make a tiger". Below is the Wikipedia description of its origin:

The proverb came…

Becoming an Atheist Activist

Let me start by saying one thing: I've always been an Atheist. I was born an Atheist (as everyone did) and my parents Catholicism just never took with me.  In the third grade, I came across a definition of Atheism in the dictionary at my parochial grade school and it changed my life forever (this story also includes my friend Bill and I discovering the definition of "Fart" in the same dictionary).  For the first time I had a title for what I felt beyond simply "Different."  Throughout my…

Are you a good person? Part: The Third

Awhile ago I was handed a religious tract in a Montreal Metro station.  I thought it would be amusing to react to it on my blog.

It started out as a kind of joke, but it's starting to feel a little like work now. I thought it would be more funny but instead it's kind of sad.  Well, let's take this old dog out back and finish it…

Kony 2012 - It's Time to STOP Him

Joseph Kony - leader of the "Lord's Resistance Army," an invention of Kony himself and tasked with doing very little other than perpetuating itself - feeds off of the children of Uganda to that end.  Children are kidnapped, girls forced into prostitution, boys given a gun and coerced into supporting Kony's army, with no other apparent goal than to be a rogue element in Uganda and the surrounding countries.  These actions have earned Joseph Kony the Number One spot on the International…
