Sex and Secularism
Amanda and I are working hard to get the survey results ready for release. Hope to have something out in May if not sooner. The data is almost overwhelming and the information coming out of it is very interesting. It tells us a lot, especially how different people are when they leave religion.
I'll be talking a couple of times in May on the results.

The Negro Thought Police
One does not easily go against the grain in the black community without risking serious repercussions and penalties, including excommunication from blackness.
Within the African-American community, often ones 'blackness' has nothing to do with ones blood connections but on ones adherence to popular group thought. This form of tribalism turns the African-American community into a monolithic presence that thwarts progress by painting individuals…

Doctor Who: The Douglas Adams serials
For all of you Douglas Adams and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fans, here are a couple of his other notable works: two serials from the long-running, classic British sci-fi show Doctor Who. Both of these serials are from what is considered the golden age of the show: the run of Tom Baker as the 4th incarnation of the eccentric, eponymous Doctor.
If you've never been exposed to the classic series of Doctor Who, these are great ones to come in on. The…

1: This is who I am (Start Here)
These Blog posts are reprints from my Facebook page. I originally wrote them with my friends and family in mind. This was kind of my coming out to them. So just keep in mind that the original audience was mostly Christian. Enjoy...
I recently had a conversation with an old friend that caused me to seriously over react. You see she had just found out that I was an atheist. She was shocked and saddened by the news and that just pissed me off. I had forgotten that as…

Ayn Rand says that religion has a monopoly on ethics. I think religion has a monopoly also on morals. Yet, I do think, that as an atheist, I have higher morals than say Jesus.

An Argument Against 'G'
The habitual capitalization of the word ‘god’ is evidence of one of the most insidious mind-games ever perpetrated by the cult of Yahweh. To understand why, one must first understand that language, as a…

Doctor Who and Atheism
For those of you heathen sci-fi geeks out there, I've got an old gem for you here. From all the way back during the Tom Baker years of Doctor Who, here is "The Face of Evil". This serial is far from bashful in its criticism of religion. If you've got some spare time and a flair for camp, this is a great one to check out. I particularly love Baker's sly banter with the Voodoo Priest character; you really can't miss it.
There are plenty of other old Doctor Who serials with…

So, I started my Ethics class two weeks ago, and it's getting kinda hairy. There is only 22 of us, and there is already a line in the sand. On one side, there are the "so obviously atheist/agnostic it is not funny" and "The bible says it is the good book so I am going to agree with it.".
The question for Wed. was "are you a relativist or an absolutist?". I, either misreading or just not really explaining myself, stated that I was an absolutist. There are things that I…

Stirring up the pot in Dixie...
The Atheist/Agnostic organization at the University of Alabama is about to do some controversial chalking on the school's campus. We're expecting a little buzz about it. Here's a little preview for the Nexus.

The Science of Good and Evil (London, April 11th, 2011)
I am going down to London to go see Sam Harris in an Intelligence Squared debate the "reverand" Dr Giles Fraser, Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral on the topic of where do our ideas about morality and meaning come from?
The last time I went to one of these it was the now legendary Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry Vs Anne Widdecombe and Archbishop John…
