One frequent argument I hear from Christians is what I call the “Judge God Argument.” Here, Christians tell me a story about a teen that is speeding, driving drunk, or some other illegal act that teenagers might commit. In this story, we are the teen and after being caught by the police we are brought before the Judge. The Judge, bound by the law and by his need for Justice (The Judge always seems to be a man because… well Christianity is a very male chauvinistic religion) delivers the verdict… Continue

I just finished watching an hour-long lecture entitled "A Universe From Nothing" by Lawrence Krauss:
(Sorry, couldn't embed the video, but here's the link.)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo&feature=player_embedded
Anyway, He mentions in it something that is mentioned actually rather often by scientists of note including Carl Sagan and Neil Degrasse Tyson, which is that we are all… Continue

Just had a great time with the Columbia, MO Atheists and Greg Lammer. It looks like we may get a Recovering from Religion group started there as well. Off to Memphis next weekend.

In Evolution: The Basics I gave the basics of evolution including mutations, natural selection and speciation in this I will go into further detail about these as well as go into genetic drift
Mutations are random changes in the sequence of the nucleotide base pares (bases for short) of DNA. The bases are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). It is these that code your genes and it is your genes that determines your inherited traits… Continue

i just had another random thought! whenever i make a new friend, meet their other friends, and then meet their parents, they all ask me what my religion is, As if religion is the most important thing in the world.(pfft) i am always polite and truthful, "Well sir/ma'am, I am atheist, but i dont judge against anyone's beliefs." this always makes them seem
happy. but me and my telepathic mind(lol) know that they're hating my guts and want me clear away from… Continue

As most atheists are aware, the White House hosted a meeting on Friday with the Secular Coalition of America (SCA). Many in the greater atheist community have been ecstatic about this first ever White House meeting with representatives of the atheist community.
There were three main issues that the SCA planned to discuss: Protecting children from religious neglect and/or abuse, ending military proselytizing, and fixing the faith-based initiative.… Continue

Dear "God": Sen. Eric Cantor certainly cannot have taken his Torah to heart. I
thought there was a Mosaic Law about not bearing false witness.
Cantor's appearance on "Meet the Press" revealed a skilled and habitual
liar. He swore an oath to represent his state's people and all the
rest of us by extension. When one swears an oath in Judaic law, one
promises to tell the truth. Cantor's lies about the health care reform
legislation shows he does not fear the god he… Continue

What is it that disturbs me the most about believers: their dishonesty. The extent to which they would actively and without hesitation subvert honest debate in the name of faith. It is not that they would do physical damage to those opposed, but rather that they would tell a lie to defend their faith and believe it themselves. Knowing you are telling a lie at least leaves hope for correction, but mistaking a fabrication of your mind as the truth undermines any hope for a true debate.

You don't need something more to get something more. That's what emergence means. Life can emerge from physics and chemistry plus a lot of accidents. The human mind can arise from neurobiology and a lot of accidents, the way the chemical bond arises from physics and certain accidents. Doesn't diminish the importance of these subjects to know they follow from more fundamental things plus accidents.

when we happen on an epiphany:
1. it is good judgment to remember that probably someone somewhere has already had it. once the glare of our brilliance has waned (or our awareness of it), we are likely to apply judicious criticism and make it practical
2. we are better off if we moved quickly on, since, as the famous saying goes, "to the one wielding a hammer, everything is a nail." as one of the profs who teaches a class on optimization says on the first day of class:… Continue

Ain't it odd that some of our Christian friends have been homeschooling their children or (for the teens here) that have friends who have been home schooled are like super Christians now? I do. and I feel that it's just wrong to keep a child in an environment full of lies. I, myself, have my share Christian (and other religious) friends, and the majority of them have little education about life,(REAL LIFE). I have been telling my friends how REAL life is without any of the religious Mumbo… Continue

The Grammar of Science, Karl Pearson
Chapter IV: Cause and Effect
1. Cause is scientifically used to denote an antecedent stage in routine of perceptions. In this sense force as a cause is meaningless. First cause is only a limit, a permanent or temporary, to knowledge. No instance, certainly not will, occurs in our experience of an arbitrary first cause in the popular sense of the word.
2. There is no inherent… Continue

I was raised "cultural" christian. My mother was religious (I think she's in doubt now) and my Father has always been an agnostic. I've been baptized... but prayers were never part of our lives outside the church and we didn't even go often to church, only on "special" occasions. We were raised to speak our mind and challenged us thinking for ourselves, so there was never any pressure from my family side. (I recently asked my mom why she never told us about hell, she answered that she was… Continue

I've heard a lot of people say that they think rape is worse than murder. I'm not sure where I stand on this, but I have a few opinions that sway me either way.
1. You can have a good reason to kill someone, like they are trying to kill you, although this may not count a murder, since it was out of self defense.
2. There is never a good reason to rape someone.
3. After a rape, the victim is never fully healed. Rape victims often have flashbacks, memories long after the… Continue
