So in the interest of getting off of our fat butts and doing something positive to lose weight my wife and I are going to start jogging. Starting tomorrow. I know I know, all diets start "tomorrow", but really, it's too dark now to start today or we would have.
We're going to try some "Couch to 5K" program thingy that she found online. I don't know how long it will last, but here's hoping it will. We could both use it.
Anyway, wish us luck. Kick me if I complain too much. Ask me how… Continue
Ok, I know, we're all good-natured atheists here, but this article would be for those of you who know creationists and fundamentalists. I know they are all hypocrites, but they are really bad about it. So I listed everything I could think of that they need to forsake. Please feel free to add to what I've got already. The whole article is at HDC.

My problem seems to be that I'm poor and perpetually on the verge of homelessness or facing hunger. When I wasn't speaking to my family for three years I fell into a dysfunctional relationship with my wife's mother and aunt. They both gave generously to us in order to keep our heads above water. Their caring was genuine and I loved them both but at the same time that they loved us they judged us for being gay. This is a strange thing that I encounter often from Christians. I couldn't speak up… Continue

Well, I finally got some sort of response from these guys. I must admit they're a bit slower on the automated responses than some other people I can think of:
"Recently you submitted a question or comment to Focus on the Family. Please know that we are currently experiencing higher than expected volumes of e-mail. Should your situation require a response, we ask that you please allow a few additional days for handling. We appreciate your patience."
It’s been a while since I last posted since classes just started up a little bit ago. One of the classes I’m taking is a comparative religion’s class. The class covers christianity, islam, and judaism. What transpired yesterday in the class really infuriated me.
We were talking about how people always try to rationalize bad events, like tsunami’s, floods, terrorist attacks, etc… One guy raised his hand… Continue
I'm going to start blogging whatever useless nonsense I happen to be thinking about or doing whenever I feel like it.
For instance right now, I would like to announce the following:
After Dark Horror Fest... Some of their "Films to Die For" are really, well... Not. One of three so far has been decent.
I think the worst part is they claim that they're films "so disturbing they don't make it to the box-office," or something of that nature anyway. Okay, if by "disturbing" they… Continue
No big deal really, my brother has his new girlfriend over to my parents house for lunch. Nothing that anyone even really gets excited about. But immediately I'm upset again because for the hundredth time I'm watching one of my siblings enjoy normal, inclusive treatment from our parents that I'm not given. For me, it's enough to cry over. It's enough to make me blow off lunch and go hungry instead. Part of me asks, should I be upset? Am I overreacting? But wouldn't anyone feel the same… Continue
Just in case the absolute futility and nihilism of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict wasn't apparent enough, some Israeli soldiers have decided to emphasize the point by deliberately shooting - with small arms and with rockets - animals in the Gaza Zoo. I suppose the soldiers weren't content with conventional ethnic cleansing, and decided that their supremacy needed demonstration against other species, too. Perhaps the soldiers… Continue
Animals shouldn't be kept imprisoned in zoos in the first place, and the Gaza Zoo was probably substandard and inhumane to begin with, but this is just pathetic. I have no sympathy for the Palestinians or the Israelis any longer. The world would probably be better off without the whole lot of them.
The other day an acquaintance asked for my opinion on an article about mercury contamination in high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Here’s my response—corrections welcome:My first smart-ass response is “good thing I only drink cane sugar or diet sodas.” ;) My initial, unreasoned, reactionary response to the article itself is… Continue
I was elated to hear President Obama recognize "non-believers." Now we need to move forward to ensure we are never left out of the mainstream political conversation. It is a great time to be a freethinker. Looking at the various meetups for freethinkers, atheists, Brights, etc., many of them have been started in just the last 18 months or so. Seems we are getting together and comparing notes in a much more public fashion. I see and hear many people "coming out" as never before. It was quite… Continue

I got a Wacom Bamboo tablet for xmas, and have been practicing with it on a site I used to mess around on some a while back. (I post as Rook on that site because it is my favorite chess piece.)
Anyway, this is a work in progress the subject of which some people here should be familiar with.
Am I? The reason I ask myself this question and now put it to all of you is what started the last summer and continued until a couple of weeks ago.
During the summer I was working with a couple of guys at my college. Both of them really nice, a Japanese guy and an American of Lao descent. The Japanese guy, let's call him Taro, one Friday invited me to a party "for international students". I said sure, let's go. I hadn't gone to any… Continue
How great is it that every time anyone decides it is not appropriate for the religious right to force their beliefs upon the public at large, specifically other peoples children, they accuse the complainers of doing the exact thing they are being asked to stop?
It's a confusing and brilliant way to argue if you ask me. It's as if you walked into a room and found a man punching a baby and the guy made eye contact, pointed at you and screamed "CHILD ABUSER!"… Continue
