My blog, Atheist Revolution, focuses on breaking free from irrational belief and opposing Christian extremism in America. Content emphasizes promoting the atheist movement (i.e., atheism, reason, science, critical thinking, etc.) and exposing the realities of Christian extremism in the United States. In addition, I regularly address progressive politics and offer tips to atheist bloggers for increasing traffic to their blogs.
Thanks, Vjack for starting this group.
I do have some tips.
1. Decide right away whether you feel like being ostracized or not. If you don't care, go ahead and tell everyone you meet that you're an atheist.
2. Decide whether or not standing up fo…
I feel your pain, lol. My degree is in Anthropology. My professor had to start the year by saying, "This is a class on Anthropology, and we will be learning the mechanisms of evolution and natural selection. This is not a religion or philosophy clas…
I agree. Because Mississippi does have a few highly educated people in it. A very few. But it seems that though they are educated, they are just short of the ... bravery? Intelligence? Chutzpah? Balls? Skepticism? Whatever? it takes to go one step f…
ROFL!!! You are so right. I'm from Hattiesburg. I lived on the coast during high school and I had a discussion with my class at Pascagoula High. I basically told them I was an atheist and that it might not be a good idea for THEM to assume everyone…
Hey dude. Thanks for the add. I was going to comment the other day on your site but I lost my account, and I'm too lazy to make a new one. You should have an option to leave comments more easily, no?
Hi vjack! As well as hosting the Aussie/Kiwi group here on Nexus I'm also the media and communications consultant for the forthcoming "Rise of Atheism" Global Atheist Convention to be held in Melbourne in March 2010. The Convention is being organized jointly by Atheist Alliance International and the Atheist Foundation of Australia.
I wonder if you could let your members know that tickets for the convention are now available online at the Convention website. We are expecting nearly 3,000 delegates, so this convention is going to be huge.
Confirmed speakers include: Richard Dawkins, AC Grayling, PZ Myers, Dan Barker, Peter Singer, Taslima Nasrin and many more.
Anything you can do to help us get the word out would be greatly appreciated.
Love your sticker... I've had the plaque on my front door for years. doesn't always stop them from knocking. I knew they were not well educated but figured they could read pictures.
I don't think I've met another atheist at my school yet (of course, I'm sure some of them are closeted), though I've heard of some (phrasing it like that makes it seem like we are a rare and endangered species...).
I like your blog, Vjack--good work. I can only imagine that to live and teach in Mississippi, the most religious state in the country by one recent measure, must be a great challenge for you. I know I couldn't do it.
You write about offering some form of haven to atheist students on your campus. I wonder whether it might be possible to organize a secular humanist champlaincy that might complement the religious organizations that no doubt have representation on your campus. The only one I know of is Greg Epstein's, at Harvard--but his work there is encouraging. He might be a resource for you.
My daughter, who is a sophomore at Yale, has made some headway there in moving toward organizing a university-sponsored (and -funded) organization, but the freethinking community on college campuses tends to be fragmented among many informal organizations. I can be difficult to bring them together. They need a champion in the administration...
I am an atheist blogger living in the heart of the American bible belt, Mississippi to be exact. I believe that improving the social and political position of atheists is a worthy goal, and I am happy to be involved.
Anecdotal:anecdotal = zero sum.
Reread my initial post, I didn't claim stats, it was anecdotal, which is all you have presented.
There is no refutation of anecdote by anecdote, plebe. No, I have no expectation that you will understand it better no…
Yes, but who's forcing women to wear high heels or lipstick? I haven't yet heard of a woman being beaten by her family for wearing flat shoes.
It's not flimsy reasoning at all -- the poor bastards are trying (within the confines of discrimination l…
And yet, for all its baggage, the word is not going away. That's why we must stand by it on positive terms.
Agreed, we can change it to any word we like, the baggage will just come along for the ride. We need to own the word and turn the perception…
me too jack - but then it wouldn't fit the proof of a god would it? I'd be happy if that bastard sicko in the sky just had them spontaneously abort at conception. No fuss, no muss. But nope - god wants babies raped to show that it's man that is the…
Saw Creation at the Galaxy yesterday. REALLY good show. Bettany did a fantastic job. I also found out it's playing at the Carnival theatre all week for those of you in the Red Deer area who still want to see it. :) You won't be disappointed.

Wow, that was so full of stereo types I don't know where to begin. Why did the "atheist" keep playing with fire? He even stole food while they were saying grace. He was slouching the entire time, apparently a belief in god is key to good posture? An…
