What a load of poppy-cock. You want a naturalistic - indeed materialist, phyicalist - theory of universals? David Armstrong. It's not Platonic, of course, it's Aristotelian. In this scheme, there are universals, but not that many. The universals whi…
A place to discuss analytic philosophy, its relationship to science, and its contemporary role in promoting rational thought and the scientific worldview.
Wakefield, being a British doctor, had very little to do with the American Medical Association. He does have a lot to do with the anti-vax brigade though.
I'm based just outside London. I'm studying for a MA in Philosophy at the University of London. I've not believed in God for quite some time now, but first consciously realised it when I was about 11 years old and said "I think the stuff they tell us in church is a story".
I did my dissertation on the many logical problems with intelligent design. I'm now spending my time trying to get my head around the last hundred years of analytic philosophy.
I am also involved in Semantic Web stuff, and enjoy soul, funk and jazz music. I also have an unhealthy but utterly pleasurable relationship with cheese.

Hi Tom and welcome. Thanks for joining analytic philosophy. With two new members I will have to actually add a discussion. Feel free to do so yourself if you wish.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I've updated me profile to include a bit more background. Am I a person? Hmm. Not sure about that. The study of metaphysics has awoken me from my dogmatic slumbers, and I have no idea what I believe anymore.
Welcome to Atheist Nexus. Don't be shy anymore, its just lovely to know that we are many, may be we are many who are going to hell...........lol,am kidding, happy new year
It is true that many people take the path of religion to lead them out of destructive life styles.
It is also true that people can do the same thing without a reliance on faith (you just don't hear about it as much).
You sound like a very nice you…
I thought it was utterly brilliant that he said Abbot's offer of a billion dollars for Hobart hospital was immoral!
His refusal of such a ridiculous bribe iis one of the first moral acts I've ever seen from a politician. Clearly the man will have a…
I've seen posts about the 50 commandments of jeebus put out by xtians that cite chapter and verse and you really don't need a commentary to go along with them.
Boy it sure does kill the whole GOP/Tea Party platform.
From the article Tommy cited.
"However, religious commentators have criticized Hawking's theorizing, saying he can never hope to explain what is essentially unexplainable."
Well doesn't that kind of invalidate their own "god" theory then? ;p
Anybody else read it? I love the basic premise, and being an atheist means I can appreciate the mythology and not get bent out of shape about the multiple deities.
Wyoming is better than the southeast, from what I've seen. It's still a solid red state, though. My big point was that there are no cities. The closest it has are Cheyenne and Casper, each of which are around 50,000 people.
The entire state barely…
I was in Panama City this past weekend, but I didn't have any free time. I was there for my brother-in-law's pinning. He was promoted to Major in the Air Force. The promotion ceremony was full of God and Jesus references, and the invocation was give…
I saw a video, or a blog post once that listed all the uncomfortable and illogical things that a person must do, according to Jesus' own words, in order to follow him. The list included hating your family, selling all your possessions, etc. I'm pret…
