Atheism is still pretty new to me. I grew up as a fundamentalist Christian. I was married to a Southern Baptist minister, but divorced him after eschewing the denomination, and later, the entire religion. We share joint custody with our 2-year old daughter.
With that part of my life over, I just recently married a wonderful man who makes me happy. It has been an incredibly difficult journey to get to where I am, but well worth it. I can't wait to see where life takes me next.
I am now a student and writer, hoping to someday enter medical school, though I am not sure I will. I have my personal blog at the above address, and I am the Little Rock Atheism examiner for Examiner.com. You can find that page at http://www.examiner.com/x-8831-Little-Rock-Atheism-Examiner
So, I had to move back in with my fundamentalist parents while my husband studies for the bar and we set up his practice (I am going to be his office manager and business promoter while I go to school). I won't write this on my regular blog because I have readers whose comments I do enjoy that are Christian. But here, where there are only atheists, I will say:THE CHRISTIANS ARE DRIVING ME CRAAAAAAZY!!!! And I do mean crazy. If I don't get out of here soon, I am going to have a nervous breakdown.… Continue
I, like many, used to be a conservative Christian. I attended a small, Southern Baptist college. And now, I am thinking WHY? I wrote a blog post on my public-everyone-can-read-it blog, Redheaded Skeptic, and de-Conversion picked it up. It sure did create a stir on my Facebook inbox!
Not only did I receive a few odd responses (and one crazy, come back to Jesus book of an email), but I am realizing I should be worrie… Continue
Hey, I attended a catholic school for four years. It took all my self control to not tell everyone there they were idiots. I don't want to tell you the number of saturday schools I got for skipping mass (every month there was school mass. I hid in t…
I share your pain Laura. My wife and adult children all are subjected to my atheist rantings nearly daily. But my sisters and cousins are all fundamentalist christians in Kansas of all places and have never been exposed to anything else. Just their…
My in laws are all fundamentalist Southern Baptists, so I can feel your pain. I could never imagine living with them for very long. I did live with them for a month or so while my wife and I were dating. I think I blocked it out of my memory, becaus…
Hang in there, Laura! Learn to process the information in an intellectual way. Remember without exhibiting it, you are superior to them because when you do the right thing it is because this is what you do, not what "God" demands of you to get into…
I can definitely relate, even though I came back to visit for the summer voluntarily. Collectively, my family goes to church about five days out of seven and I'm expected to accompany them. They constantly grill me about getting baptized - they can'…

This is a group for atheists who are interested in encouraging and fostering an effective space program for the purpose of exploration, technological development, resource development, energy production, and the long term survival of humanity.
very nice. Thanks for sharing. If you mentioned this and I missed it, my apologies, but did you experience any sort of fall out from friends/family when you deconverted?
oh, I'm so sorry! I was going to say some of the same things that have already been said, but since you've already been given great advice, just know that you are doing the right thing. And I definitely agree about the chemical thing. Estrogen from…
I agree with John D: reason can apply to philosophy, not just science. To be reasonable rather than dogmatic in forming our ideas on morality, culture, etc.
It gets better. I fought being an atheist, too, but now I'm happy. I'm happy as an atheist and happier than I've ever been in my life. And I have a lot of problems, so that's saying something! :)
And I'm sorry about your father. How horrible, what…
Well, we all know very religious people don't have a sense of humor about themselves, which is why we need to recover! Learning that it's okay to not take ourselves so seriously is part of the process. ;)
Hey, I just wanted to say hi.
I live in Fayetteville too. I don't have very many friends on here that live in Fayetteville, let alone Arkansas. Anyway, hello!
Thanksgiving, like winter solstice(aka christmas) is fun minus the superstition and claims of miracles(virgin birth, angels, astrologers .... need I go on ?)our religious history is something we should cherish as a part of our heritage ,We should keep the good stuff like getting together with family, good food ,socializing etc and throw away all the nonsensical stuff. So we can still enjoy Christmas and Thanksgiving without the irrational and more so I would say because I finally had sex on christmas last year ,this was hard for me even after becoming a rationalist because I always had this picture of Jesus up there going "just don't fuck on my birthday will ya"? .And I suspect there are many fellow primates of mine that have the same issue ,to them I would like to say make this Christmas extra special :)
I just read that you had to sit through a Ken Ham lecture. I chose to witness his wackiness this summer. I took a vacation to the east coast and stopped by the ole Creation Museum for a few giggles. I have plenty of pictures on my profile from the day. Ham is a special kind of special!
From the article Tommy cited.
"However, religious commentators have criticized Hawking's theorizing, saying he can never hope to explain what is essentially unexplainable."
Well doesn't that kind of invalidate their own "god" theory then? ;p
Anybody else read it? I love the basic premise, and being an atheist means I can appreciate the mythology and not get bent out of shape about the multiple deities.
Wyoming is better than the southeast, from what I've seen. It's still a solid red state, though. My big point was that there are no cities. The closest it has are Cheyenne and Casper, each of which are around 50,000 people.
The entire state barely…
I was in Panama City this past weekend, but I didn't have any free time. I was there for my brother-in-law's pinning. He was promoted to Major in the Air Force. The promotion ceremony was full of God and Jesus references, and the invocation was give…
I saw a video, or a blog post once that listed all the uncomfortable and illogical things that a person must do, according to Jesus' own words, in order to follow him. The list included hating your family, selling all your possessions, etc. I'm pret…
I sometimes wear the customary leather vest with the HOG Miami logo on the back but a closer look reveals the American Atheists and Freedom From Religion Foundation patches on the right rear side. My do-rag has a gold Atheist atom pin on the tail .…
