I live and work in Birmingham Alabama. I am in the IT field as a DBA/programmer. I am married - no kids. 37 years old and like to read anything I can get my hands on and enjoy the outdoors. I have visited AN before just never joined, however reconsidered after reading a post on the Pharyngula science blog. I am interested in evolution, physics, and philosophy; or really anything to do with science. The most difficult part about being an atheist is dealing with the religious nuts like we have here in the south. People who do not live here have a hard time understanding what it is like; almost like being gay or African American in the 1950's. We have more churches in this state per capita than anywhere else in the country but Birmingham as one of the highest crime rates; go figure.

Thanks for the complement AJ on the avatar.
KH - I work for the company that used to own Sloss. The company was a huge conglomerate, but since we were a associated company we would get free passes for the annual Halloween ghost hunt at Sloss, kids love it. I am not superstitious at all but the event is interesting.
I feel your pain...I live just south of Atlanta and the fundies are everywhere! I saw the difference when I was stationed in California for 4 years...Like two different countries! The south has come a long way but it is still crazy! Well, most of the folks who live here are!
