To Michael

My friend Michael recently passed away after what seems like a lifetime of medical complications. He left behind a wife, one of my best friends, Maureen, and their two year old daughter, Layla. His funeral took place in the Baptist church Michael's parents had raised him in, and though he hadn't attended since his late teens, the two pastors who spoke seemed unwilling to admit any of this. They talked about Michael's faith and about the (Heavenly) Father they all had in common more than they…See More

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die, because they're never going to be born. The number of possible people who could be standing here in my place, but who will never see the light of day, outnumber the sand grains of the Sahara. We know this because the sets of possible combinations of DNA so massively outnumber the sets of actual combinations.
So we are fantastically lucky to be alive."

I found this at my blog today. I posted it there almost exactly a year ago, when the Presidential election was in full swing. I thought anyone who might stumble across it here would, at the very least, understand where I was coming from when I wrote it.
