I was never convinced by the argument that Al Gore has a conflict of interest so assume he's lying. Profit drives Global Warming Denial, such as the oil and coal industries and Koch Bros. They live in glass houses. They started with profit and then got into the Global Warming Denial business. Al Gore started out concerned about the planet, and then he got into the Green Investments business. He put his money where his mouth is. Isn't it hypocrisy to say you're worried about the planet but continue your economic life "business as usual"?

Your comparison of taking-Climate-Destabilization-seriously to evangelical religion is interesting. When I saw Al Gore doing an Inconvenient Truth lecture, it didn't resemble a Billy Graham impersonation at all. You claim that similarities to Billy Graham's technique actually made people lose interest quickly. You also say people lost interest because they didn't understand the proof. This is like Joe the Plumber winning out over actual facts in politics, because people easily understand concrete personal anecdotes but get insulted when somebody tries to "lecture them with numbers." The thing is, many religions succeed exactly because the congregants don't "understand the proof." They affirm a grab bag of contradictory beliefs. Religious converts don't "understand proofs" and they do listen. They listen with their "gut," their "heart," rather than their head. So perhaps Australian culture differs seriously from that of the US. If Gore sounded too much like a zealot to be taken seriously by Australians, in the US right wing zealotry calls out to  hearts and minds with a more powerful voice than all of us who are concerned about Climate Destabilization.

I agree that the military are enormous uncounted contributors of greenhouse gases. Others have written on that. However, giving up and trying to adapt is not an option. Peter D Ward says that if we burn all of our fossil fuel, the Venus Syndrome is likely, and if we also burn the tar sands, it's guaranteed. In the Venus Syndrome, greenhouse gases increase the global temperature, causing water to evaporate from the oceans. Water vapor is itself a greenhouse gas, so there's a positive feedback. The planet gets hotter and hotter until oceans boil away. Eventually carbon bakes out of the ground too, and you get a planet similar to Venus. Absolutely sterile. It never fails to amaze me that science-oriented people have short horizons when they contemplate the future. So many only look a few centuries ahead. Dr. Ward is an exception.

Because there is no god there are no religions

This line I've been hearing more lately. But then there are also 'godless' religions like Buddhism and Humanism. I've never had any religion, I despise all religions, not only the gods or non-gods they defend (not to same degree of course, but still, all of them). Religions, to me, are but philosophical and managerial doctrines used by powerful humans to enslave lesser humans. Some days on these sites I get frustrated enough that I want to start my own atheist website, without humanists and agnostics and Buddhists and deists an whatever other spiritual mumbo jumbo weak sheople thrive upon. If growing the ranks of atheists means being inclusive of all supernatural minded people out there, then I say lets shut up and not grow the ranks anymore. The more I read about agnostics, the more my sliding scale bar comes close to falling off the end! I used to be tolerant but now IMO if someone is even .001% sure of god, they're theists! Let's send agnostics back to where they belong, among theists, an infinitely teensy theist but a theist nonetheless!
