About Me:
I'm the only atheist I know. My family are all hard core christians. They know I'm atheist and pray for me a lot. I tell them I can't go to hell because I don't believe in it. I like gardening and my dogs. I like the fall. I hate the heat. Well, hate is a strong word, but I don't like it much at all.

I like to work in my yard. Garden would be a stretch. It's just a really large yard, about two acres, with lots of shrubs and plants. My star magnolia is my favoite shrub. I raised it from a twig a friend gave me. It's two years old and about two feet tall now. It blooms early with an amazing, fragrant, white flower.

If you can't do your job, due to your religion, should you have the job???

Posted on December 11, 2013 at 2:42pm 8 Comments

I was standing in the check-out line at the local Walmart (in Central City,Ky) when the line was stopped.  The cashier refused to check the lady ahead of me because she was buying beer.   Me, being me, asked what the problem was? The clerk said she couldn't scan the beer because "It"s against my religious convictions".  So the lady with the beer, and I, had to wait until a manager was called up to scan the beer onto the ticket.

I laughed about it.  It's so outlandish!  So, the…

Racism and Keeping My Mouth Shut.

A few years ago I was at the local country store. It's what passes as a restaurant in these parts. While I was sitting there, reading the weekly paper, a young man came in and started running his mouth to the clerk.  He was talking about a national sports incident where a black football player had a domestic violence incident with his white girlfriend.

He threw around the n word a LOT.  "Fucking n***** with a white women.  That's disgusting...."  He continued on in this vein for…

What's a black president to do??

Posted on October 9, 2013 at 4:25pm 18 Comments

First off I'm not a blogger but I have a question/statement that doesn't seem to go anyplace else.

Am I the only one who thinks the president has given in to the repubicans enough?  This last go around about death benefits for veterans families.  I can see where the families need the money.  I would certainly fall into that category.  But....if Obama gives in here isn't he just setting himself up for more piecemeal, paying out to progams of the republicans choosing?  And…

That's why I spend my time here. When MySpace functioned as a social network, in the Atheists group people were usually nasty to me. AN is civilized and "safe". That's why I donate $20 monthly, it's worth much more than that to me.

Hi k.h. ky, thank you for the welcome. I'm still fairly new and still reading, reading and more reading on this site.  It amazes me how there is so much information, so many opinions and just flat out ideas that really hadn't occurred to me.

Yes, I have been busy.  I have organized 3 Freethinkers meetings a month in this small town of Madison, IN.  That gives me something to look forward to every month.  I'm also busy bowling, dancing and chasing women.  It's fun to be retired.

Perhaps we can make a difference one day but most likely not in my lifetime, although helping to get it rolling in the right direction is something that needs to be done.

I reckon you're pretty sensitive to all that religious "goin's on" at weddings/funerals. I'm more "go with the flow" kind of person. I just laugh at the hocus pocus stuff, ridiculing the sincereity of the ceremony.

Thank you for being a friend! Laissez les bons temps roulez!

You can find inexpensive trade paperbacks of selections of Robert Green Ingersoll's speeches, essays, and poems at Half.com.  I'm slowly amassing a collection. One of my favorites is Some Mistakes  of Moses, in which he takes apart the astronomical and geological (flat earth) nonsense in Genesis, and continues on through the five books that are attributed to Moses by True Believers.

Ingersoll was not only highly intelligent and fearless in going public with  his lack of belief in gods...which ruined any chances he might have had for a political career...he was witty.  And his speaking engagements were almost always sold out - standing room only; very unusual for an acknowledged agnostic/heretic in the 19th Century Victorian Era.

We need someone like him today.  Desperately.  There are several famous atheist writers and speakers now, but they are too "academic" to appeal to "just plain" people the way he did.

Dan Barker comes closest, but he does a lot of debates with Christian scholars that go over my head sometimes. He has written some funny songs about non-belief, plus serious ballads, and even set some of Ingersoll's poems to music. I have my CD wake-up player set to play his "Nothing Fails Like Prayer" right  now.  It's a cha-cha rhythm.  Tee-hee!

(Another Barker song that I listen to a lot starts out: "Some people try to tell me that I need to find a god to love, but after looking them all over, I'll take none of the above."  I'll try to upload it to  Hang With Friends  this weekend.

See you around!
