Are we more than fancy computational engines?

so the 'supporters of free speech' at change.org have an enormous drive going to prevent Bill Maher from speaking at Berkely (last I heard, it was up to 2200 signatures) because of 'hate speech'…Continue

Are we more than fancy computational engines?

Interesting (fairly long) article discussing the premise that the human brain seems to have some capacity for solving non-computable problems (i.e not solvable with any Turing machine, no matter how large), And  possible areas to consider how this might be possible. Of course, understanding how non-computable problems can be solve itself requires stepping outside the algorithmic world. He also addresses a lot of objections to the arguments. If true, than despite the people who say AI is the…See More

About Me:
I'm an old coot, raised JW, became sceptical then outrightly disbelieving many years ago.

Politically (after years of wandering through philosophies-du-jour), I'm strongly pro-individual freedom, pro-market, to the discomfort of both my liberal and conservative friends.

Day job is computer administration for a large corporation. Off hours I like anything with machines and tools.

We live in a society of generalities: not all cyclists are rednecks and vice versa. No offense intended.

Nice looking dog you have! "Securing" a dog is a concern. Previous dogs have stayed outdoors ALL the time, never running away . But I live out in the country. Free roaming is my preference, but the H.S. doesn't like to hear that. I'm losing sleep trying to come up with an alternative.

We invite you to make good friends by joining the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Astronomy, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Gods, Atheism, Evolution, Darwin..." with nearly 700 discussion topics and over 3400 members.
