jay H replied to Just a Voice's discussion Is consciousness nothing more than a veneer of our biological underpinnings?
"Emotions are ESSENTIAL. People with brain damage that destroys emotional response become lethargic and purposeless. Emotions provide the drive to do things (including conversing and posting things here). Things that we enjoy, we enjoy through…"

"One thing that must be remembered is that analogy is useful, but not a complete argument. At some level, every analogy does not fit. Just because you can phrase "because X, then Y" does not necessarily make it true. This is a concern in…"

jay H commented on Joan Denoo's blog post ...And What If I'm Wrong?
"Since there are thousands of religions, and an infinite number of possible ones, if you wrong and there are gods, the odds are extremely good that your listener is worshipping the one wrong as well. So we're all in the same boat."

jay H replied to Ruth Anthony-Gardner's discussion FDA stops Ebola vaccine
"Yes but to establish that it is safe, and that it actually works takes a lot longer than 4 days. What if 1 time out of 100,000 it caused an infection? That would mean 3000 cases caused by a vaccine vs the handful we have now. "

jay H replied to Pat's discussion They Hate Us Even Outside The Bible Belt
"That's it. Each person has their trigger points, (NRA is not a not a critical issue with me). I will vote for candidates who are really strong on individual liberty (which pretty much rules out both Dems and Repubs)."

jay H replied to Pat's discussion They Hate Us Even Outside The Bible Belt
"This is just an example of a targeted ad, they hope hit trigger points on a certain group of voters. Nothing really unique, that same thing is used for all sorts of hot-button issues: "Candidate X is approved by the NRA, vote for candidate…"

jay H replied to matthew greenberg's discussion is Texas ready for Ebola?

About Me:
I'm an old coot, raised JW, became sceptical then outrightly disbelieving many years ago.

Politically (after years of wandering through philosophies-du-jour), I'm strongly pro-individual freedom, pro-market, to the discomfort of both my liberal and conservative friends.

Day job is computer administration for a large corporation. Off hours I like anything with machines and tools.

We live in a society of generalities: not all cyclists are rednecks and vice versa. No offense intended.

Nice looking dog you have! "Securing" a dog is a concern. Previous dogs have stayed outdoors ALL the time, never running away . But I live out in the country. Free roaming is my preference, but the H.S. doesn't like to hear that. I'm losing sleep trying to come up with an alternative.

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. After you've searched for stuff that interests you in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.
