I am largely in the same boat as you. I still attend church with my wife. There are still people within the church that I consider friends, but I have been working on developing social connections outside of church. It…"
"Thanks for the reply. I used to downplay the teachings. Now, when brought up, I try share corollary or contrasting teachings from other religions and modern culture (including science) that are just as, or more valid.
Adventism values family…"
Did you have anything to add? It is an admittedly "interesting" situation. I have always downplayed parts of Adventism I had problems with, and would stop further investigation for fear of reprisal (early on) and stigma as a youth.…"
"My wife and kids are still Adventist. Given that the church is pretty much our entire sicial life, i still attend church with them.
I presume there ae others in this same boat or have sailed these waters before? What is/was your method of coping or…"
"There's the recent documentary "Seventh Gay Atheists".
With JWs and Mormons, they're weird and it's hard to see anything good they do for society. Adventists have spent the last 60 years trying to seem as mainstream as…"
"Thank you. If you want to hear more of my voice feel free to check out my podcast the Atheist Nomads. Upstate New York during the time of the Second Great Awakening was a hotbed of crazy. The culture was very open to all kind of ideas and…"
"I went on two mission trips during my time with the church, ironically both to Cancun. The first was my senior year of high school and I had already been struggling with a sense of calling. That sense got even stronger down there and when I got bit…"
I hadn't found your Facebook or your blog before I saw this site. I found this site and this group when I Googled . I was surprised to see the site had been created only a couple days prior (if I didn't know better I would call it divine providence!). I looked at the group info and recognized you from WW. From there I found you blog.
Freethought convention! That sounds interesting. Looks like it's my weekend to work, though.
Thanks for your reply to my request for more information regarding how to deal with my SDA friend. You've given me heaps to work with. I always find an insider or ex insider really useful for getting information - to dispel fears and prejudice also and get a better idea of what someone might be thinking about in terms of my world view. I was brought up in an Indian Kult, so I understanding the small religion culture to some extent. But having your from the ground experience in SDA is really helpful. My friend is having some personal troubles and is taking some support from me, so it’s likely that belief might come up in our friendship, and I like to know where I stand. So thanks for sharing your experience and views on the matter. Alice :)
