If your son is interested seek out a mixed martial-art school. All the ones here in VA. that I have had interactions with are very supportive of young men and women in these situations. They wont turn him into a brute or a bully, nor convince him…

God in Global Warming

Posted on January 25, 2009 at 11:24am 4 Comments

I’ve been reading a text about global warming. It’s a technical book that describes how to calculate temperature, energy into our atmosphere and energy out. So I was surprised to see religion as one of the author’s solutions. He believes if people viewed the world in the original sense that god intended (humans as gardners), they’d take better care of the planet. People hold a special role in tending to god’s garden and keeping it flourishing.

But religion is part of what got us into… Continue

Stupid Liberals

My kid has a lot of strikes against him. He’s a nerd. He’s the shortest and skinniest kid in his middle-school grade (he’s not even on the pediatrician’s weight chart). He wears braces. He has divorced parents. And he’s come out of the proverbial closet as a democrat and an agnostic in a town that is 92% Republican and very Baptist.

So I discovered while on vacation with him that the kids are still teasing him about the Obama thing. (By election day, he was the ONLY kid is his class… Continue

Tug-of-War

Posted on January 6, 2009 at 10:00am 3 Comments

So my 10-year-old says to me this morning (as he has often said), "I can't believe god, if there is a god, would send people to hell. I mean, why would he do that?" In other words: the idea that someone who claims to love his children would send them into eternal agony does not mesh with his understanding of the world. Parents who love their children wouldn't do that, why would the almighty do that?

"And my dad says god will build a big mansion in heaven for everyone. Why would he… Continue

Acorns don't fall far from the tree

Posted on January 5, 2009 at 10:08pm 2 Comments

Or so the saying goes. But after seeing my younger bro over Christmas, I am struck by how different we are. Just two years my junior, he believes in the faith healers, the palm readers, the guys who can look out over a crowd and "read" people. He doesn't belong to a church, but he believes that a god hears his prayers, that there is divine justice and god is judge. Oh brother. How does that happen? How do the acorns fall and roll so far?…

Christmas Spirit

Yeah, people can disappointment you, but they also amaze you, too.

Humans can be greedy. Many are selfish. Some are lazy. A few can commit horrific acts of violence. But there are also those folks who give generously of themselves. A blogger recently raised over $11,000 to save a family from foreclosure. Strangers from around the country sent money.

There are stories that go unreported every… Continue

Actually I was allowed to make my own choices growing up. I did attend church for a while when I was in the third grade. It just wasn't me. It just didn't figure out. So when I was asked if I wanted to continue I said, "No." And that was it.
My father is an atheist but my mother at one time taught Sunday School.
My father is a well travelled man. My parents loved me. It was my choice all along.
Now I did attend a Baptist University when I first started college, but left there to attend Texas A&M. It was a nice little college, but had it not the religion it could become a much bigger university and better known.

Then I also know that if we as Atheists, and smarter folks do not have kids.....it's certainley not going to help the cause, nor the rest of humanity if those whom are smarter and better do not procreate for whatever reason.

See that in of itself just makes me so on edge about the idea to have children. I just do not think that society cannot handle the idea that GOD is not necessary to lead a good moral life. And if that were not enough, they have to prostitute their faith onto other human beings and it's not like they are suggesting they could be wrong...NO, NO they assert that they are correct and their version of "Chrisitianity" is correct on top of that even. I just don't know to be fair. I like the idea of teaching children, sharing what I know. Which is why when I am older maybe in my 50's it is one of my goals to be a teacher my in the same manner of Plato and Socrates. Teaching children how to examine to think, not to be grounded in school ciriculum. But we shall see...but having my own aside from students....the way around this world...I just cannot find a reason which makes me both happy, puts me at ease, and sounds like a good reason for me to do so. But I hold out the in time a truly good answer will present itself.

As far as banning the books Susan Jacoby's Freethinkers History of American Secularism really helps explain why the South and much of the West have this seemingly intrinsic natural aversion to new knowledge and science.

Yes you can say that. They really try to ban FICTIONAL (not real) books? I know I had heard rumors about stuff like that in the south and some places out west but didn't imagine how real that actually is out there for you folks. Man, just makes me step back and take awe. I always figured if I had kids I would try to gear them to think independently about all things...religion especially. I just don't know how well I would deal with the animosity my kids would get from other parents. It's one thing for me as an adult, but when you attack the kids...I just can't respect that.

Whats is it like to raise such kids in Texas? Not sure about the having kids of my yet...but it would be nice to get some sound advice from someone who is raising their kids the same way I would want too? Is it hard for them fitting in being freethinkers, is the tolerance there or non-existant?

I don't remember suggesting that. Psychology is pretty foreign to me so it's hard for me to fairly judge the article on EP. It seems to make sense but the comments left on the SCIAM website were pretty critical of the author. I guess that's why I'm more fond of the hard sciences, like physics and engineering, where you can run an experiment and your idea either works or it doesn't.
