Jim DePaulo commented on Atheist Exile's blog post 'A New Argument for God?'
I've always given attribution to Einstein. “Knowledge is a sphere of light in a universe of darkness – the greater the sphere of light grows, the greater will be the periphery of darkness." But then some obscure Greek…

Jim DePaulo commented on matthew greenberg's blog post 'I Believe'
Shorter statements: John Adams' religion, “To do good”. Abraham Lincoln, “When I do bad I feel bad. When I do good I feel good – that is my religion” Those are definitions most Atheist could live with and would…

Jim DePaulo replied to Alice's discussion 'Questions for the Atheist Community' in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
It's easier to maintain a narrative based in the truth than one born in lies. The motivation to lie exists because the truth will hurt. The ethical individual will take the lumps and acknowledge the truth; the unethical will create what ever…

Jim DePaulo replied to Sentient Biped's discussion 'What are your predictions for 2012?'
I will predict that in 2012 1) The general election campaigns will be the most expensive and nastiest in the nation's history. 2) Obama will win with Biden as his VP. 3) Obama will use his Presidential powers more often to counter the foot…

Jim DePaulo replied to Brad's discussion 'Will Rick Santorum's conservative social values hurt his campaign for the presidency?'
I'm pretty sure people are laughing at us – hell! I'm laughing at us. When I look at the republican aspirants I can only think, WTF are they thinking?

Jim DePaulo replied to Brad's discussion 'Will Rick Santorum's conservative social values hurt his campaign for the presidency?'
They are trying to compete with all the Mormon ads on the tube or the Christian Mingle ads (where god picks your date for you). What's coming next – ads for the Snake Handlers?

Dee Neely replied to Jim DePaulo's discussion 'Could We be the Aborigines on the Beach?' in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
The fact that we have discovered fewer planets than stars is not connected to the numbers. It is a matter of ability to perceive. The stars are easy to find. They are so easy to find that we can see some of them with the naked eye. However, planets…

MADHUKAR KULKARNI replied to Jim DePaulo's discussion 'Could We be the Aborigines on the Beach?' in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
Scientiests on earth are looking forward to erecting habitable settlements on the moon and the mars. I think any aliens moving out of their own planet are likely to follow the same principle. They may prefer to find uninhabitated places that…

There's one way in which an interstellar encounter could never be like a colonial-era encounter: Space is absolutely rife with resources which can be remotely collected. Any species which has achieved interstellar space-faring capabilities…

Colony Collapse Disorder Needs More Attention

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 2:17pm 1 Comment

Although there have been occasional articles concerning "colony collapse disorder" (CCD) in domestic bee hives it doesn't seem to have risen to serious public concern. It may in fact impact our lives (and bank accounts) in a more critical manner than realized. With the rapidly growing population it seems unwise to ignore any threat to the food supply.

Albert Einstein said, "if the bee disappeared off…

"Not All Pedophilia Is Abusive", Bill Donohue

Posted on April 26, 2010 at 12:32pm 9 Comments

Bill Donohue’s Catholic League has reacted to the sex abuse scandal surrounding the Catholic Church by blaming the scandal on homosexuality and attacking newspapers like the New York Times for covering the story. Last month, the organization ran an ad criticizing the paper for failing to recognize the “pedophilia crisis” is a “homosexual crisis” and Donohue has appeared on CNN to… Continue

Is the US the Next Ash Hole?

Posted on April 19, 2010 at 4:30pm 9 Comments

The Iceland volcano with the easy to remember name, Eyjafjallajökull, is still spewing ash into the atmosphere. It has paralyzed European air travel; many airlines are losing 10's of millions of dollars daily. There are now some strong indicators that the cloud will find its way into US and Canadian air…

Hi Jim, thanks for friending me!  I noticed you on the Legalize It! group.  What's up with that group, is it dead?  I like your new moniker, Old Smiley!  Maybe I'll see you around.

Noticed that you went to CSU.  I lived in Boulder CO for 10 years. Beautiful town, very progressive, a bastion of the liberal.  I'm in Portland now, also very liberal.  I just couldn't survive in a conservative community.
