Honestly, I haven't been keeping track of that for a few years now, as I've been focused on other things. But, to give you an example, a couple of days ago, I just re-bought one of Isaac Asimov's Foundation books and started…

Wonderist replied to James M. Martin's discussion 'Scrooge’s Atheism & Certain Problems of Writing “Imaginative” Fiction' in the group Atheist Writers
I'm surprised no one has suggested that you try out science fiction, fantasy, horror, or super-heroic fiction. A more-general catch-all label that is frequently used is 'speculative fiction', which also includes alternate history, as…

Wonderist replied to Ruth Anthony-Gardner's discussion 'Bad news about the power of "unshakeable belief"' in the group Hang With Friends
I don't agree. In fact, I think that is the worst thing one could do, to escalate the arms race of "I'm right, because I'm right! You're wrong, because you're wrong!"   The answer is to promote skeptical,…

Wonderist replied to Ruth Anthony-Gardner's discussion 'Bad news about the power of "unshakeable belief"' in the group Hang With Friends
Not exactly an accurate model of human belief, I'm afraid. Talk to to people and you're convinced? Just like that? Sorry, doesn't work that way in reality. The computer model is incredibly naive, and that the researchers are…

Thanks, Kelly. In my recent work with tutoring young students, I've applied a wonder-based philosophy to it: Learning is inherently fun, and anything that gets in the way of it being fun needs to be changed or removed to let the learning be fun…

Kelly D. Rodgers replied to Wonderist's discussion 'Taking a Step Beyond Awe' in the group Wonderism
Very profound, I agree with this, and it is very true that to discover the wonder of the reality around us we must explore, learn, discover, and grow [evolve] through that discovery. Discovery brings a sense of awe[Philos-type] and wonder. If we as a…

Wonderist replied to Zachary Moore's discussion 'DFWCoR Diversity Council' in the group Black Freethought
Awesome! The good thing about this new council is that diversity is a positive value which makes sense for any movement to have. There's no need to justify it as 'politically correct', because it need not (should not) be about…

I support Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!

Posted on May 19, 2010 at 2:30pm 6 Comments

Blasphemy is a victimless crime. In fact, blasphemy is a worthwhile pursuit in support of human rights and freedoms.

The religious taboo against depicting the religious person Mohammed does not, and cannot, have any rational or ethical justification. The only way to 'justify' such a taboo is through ostracism, intimidation, coercion, force, and ultimately violence. None of these 'justifications' are valid. They are all founded on the principle of terror.

I reject terror, in… Continue

Starting a local meet up? Why not?

Posted on May 6, 2010 at 12:21pm 1 Comment

I've had the urge to meet up with local freethinkers and atheists for a while now. But the only local group is dedicated to humanism, and weren't so much into the socializing and enjoying a stimulating conversation type of thing. Plus they only meet once a month, and I need more face-time than that.

Living in my local community, there's not much to choose from. So, finally, I just said, "What the heck, I'll start it myself." With the help of Atheist Nexus' features like easily starting… Continue

Hey Ayatollah, Leave Those Kids Alone!

Posted on February 26, 2010 at 8:00am 4 Comments

To avoid feeling powerless about all the crap going on in the world, I sometimes turn a blind eye to the 'news' of dreadful events. I feel some shame in that, but I have enough problems dealing with my little life, and I do what I can to promote atheism, free-thinking, reason, science, critical thought, wonder, etc.

So, I don't know all the details about what's going on in Iran, except I know it's bad bad shit and I wish it would stop, but I don't know what I can do to… Continue

Atheist Comedian/Songwriter Tim Minchin Could Have Christmas Hit

Posted on December 18, 2009 at 3:45pm 9 Comments

Wouldn't it be cool to have a freethinker's song remembered as a popular Christmas song? Help spread the word. There's a chance Tim Minchin's song White Wine in the Sun could go to the UK Top 40, which would make it the first openly atheist Christmas song to do so. (It's already #67 on the UK Top… Continue

What is wonderism?

Posted on November 30, 2009 at 12:59pm 2 Comments

New post summarizing and describing What is wonderism?:

"I've gotten at least a few comments from people along the lines of, "I'm still not sure what to make of wonderism." In my attempts to explain it, I find myself writing longer and longer articles, with more and more detail. Sometimes it's harder to express an idea in just a few words, than in many words! Pascal's famous quote comes to mind:… Continue
