I am so glad to hear you say nederland is a good place for atheists. As for me, I regret to say that unless one lives in an extremely large, urbane, highly sophisticated city (e.g., New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, for example), we can be targets of unfair prejudice because of our atheist beliefs.
Although the USA was founded SPECIFICALLY as a SECULAR nation, stupid persons in the uneducated religious right have hijacked our politics and wrongly convinced others that if a person is not a christian, he or she lacks morality. ( must ask, how STUPID is that??)

Now it is the task of American atheists like me to make these religious right-wingers understand and accept that just because we do not believe in their silly imaginary beings does not mean we can not or that we do not have a VERY firmly established, VERY staunchly-believed in set of highly ethical morals and values. Because, dear readers, WE DO.

Our challenge now is to make sure that those who oppose us because we are not specifically xtian (Christian) back off from their unfair criticisms. We pursue a moral life, no matter how you label it.

On another topic, please check out www.couch-surfing.com. It's great site for travelers, I, jillian, am 'heretick' in Las Vegas on this site, and am glad to host fellow atheists, provided two things.
One, that they do not smoke at all. Two, that they do not need me to provide them any transportation. Other than that, I often have a free couch.
