Travis Hedglin replied to Philip Jarrett's discussion Determinism VS Predictability
"You seem to be under the impression that one either can have full control, or no control at all. This is not so. One cannot control the universe, but they can learn to control themselves to some extent. I would certainly hope no one assumes that…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Richard's discussion Will Religion Survive the Discovery of Life in Space?
"We would probably be destroyed, as we could not have picked worse representatives for our race. The fundamentalists would make them think of us as little more than cattle... cattle too violent and hateful to be allowed to exist."

Travis Hedglin replied to Philip Jarrett's discussion Determinism VS Predictability
"Determinism has little value as sufficient data is almost never in evidence. Also, even if it were true, we would all still be left with the illusion of free will regardless. However, those using it to remove culpability in such a way as to posit…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Richard's discussion Will Religion Survive the Discovery of Life in Space?
"Perhaps, but they would not have to play nice for that either. If they view us as primitive, as we do other animals, they would not have to care how the study was done. Do we ask monkeys or labrats if they want to vivisected and studied? Why should…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Richard's discussion Will Religion Survive the Discovery of Life in Space?
"Lets see, the universe is 13.77 ± 0.059 billion years old according to our best estimates, and our solar system has been around about 4.5 billion. Humans have been around for what, about a couple of hundred thousand years or so? I really do…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Richard's discussion Will Religion Survive the Discovery of Life in Space?
"It is not reasonable to assume that they will be superior in any way but technologically. Having bigger, better toys, does not necessarily mean anything more than just that. However, if we learn we are the "elder race", we might as well…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Richard's discussion Will Religion Survive the Discovery of Life in Space?
"The hope is that any sufficiently advanced civilization that is capable of such travel would be older, so people also assume that it would be more... Well "mature" for lack of a better word... There certainly no reason to assume that it…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Ligia Hougland's discussion Dawkins is wrong. Religion is rational
"I will only read it if you promise it is an entirely rational and reasonable argument for religion being more that wishful thinking, otherwise it is probably just another variant of arguments that had already been debunked eons ago."

Travis Hedglin replied to Richard's discussion Will Religion Survive the Discovery of Life in Space?
"Yes, there will even be some who deny such a discovery, even if introduced to them. But you already know that, don't you. I am sure you are fully aware how many demented, delusional, purposefully ignorant people there really are in this world.…"

Travis Hedglin replied to G's discussion Conscience
"Most people have some sort of conscience, but most people have also been in a situation were they knowingly did something wrong. I am sure we could compile a huge list of those things, and even all the justifications and excuses we all had for doing…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Philip Jarrett's discussion Determinism VS Predictability
"Determinism should by its very nature imply predictability, when there is enough information to predict something. I literally have no idea what you will do next, I do know what I will do next(barring some unforeseen circumstance that I am currently…"

Travis Hedglin replied to Tyler Holmstrom's discussion How do you feel when other people discuss God(s) as if they apply to you? How do you respond?
"I am sorry to hear of your rough experience. I hope you are able to find friends that are willing to accept you for who you are, rather than who they want you to be."

Travis Hedglin replied to Stephanie Chiller's discussion Why do allot of Atheists support aborition?
"I think something is missing too, I would like to hear why she does not support it. I am not asking because I am looking for an argument or anything, I would just like to know why."

Travis Hedglin replied to Stephanie Chiller's discussion Why do allot of Atheists support aborition?
"A. There are more reasons than simple rape where people would want an abortion. What if the pregnancy where killing them? What if you find out that it is going to have serious defects? Your imagination should probably give you even more examples if…"

Travis Hedglin replied to joey kurt flockheart's discussion Agnostic to Gnostic maybe?
"Most atheists are agnostic, they do not claim to know that no flavor of god could possibly exist anywhere at any time. We simply do not have faith in any flavor of god. If a new religion popped up that worshiped wooden spoons, we could probably…"

Welcome, Travis! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Loners and Introverts.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically. Texas is especially vulnerable.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

On a personal note, I've developed an animated gif technique, sort of “pull quote marries slideshow”. Samples are scattered across various groups, but you can find them easily by going to my twitter account. Each tweet has a link (after the description and before the hashtags) to a visually rich example here at Atheist Nexus. If you like them, please follow me

We invite you to join the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Astronomy, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Gods, Atheism, Evolution, Darwin..." with 700 discussion topics and 3600+ members.
