Thanks for the article link, Rikka. This article really shows us how important it is that we began to act; atheist should not be harassed and threatened with lawsuits if they run for public office.

I agree with Tom; with an election coming up this fall, we should try to bring attention to this. For one, as a group, we should try to draft a general letter to the editor regarding the Preamble and Art. 6, Sec 8 that each of us could then…

So, what would you put into a letter to your Congressperson re the NC State Constitution? Any lawyers out there? Sponsor a bill to rewrote the Preamble AND Art. 6 Sec 8?

Let's be honest, the majority of the people in this state would vote to keep it since amendments in this state have to get the approval of the voters. The church's would immediately campaign to get their congregations to vote know on the…

I can't fathom the folks in my corner of NC voting to ammend. Atheists here are rare as hens teeth.

Hey Tony (and all), A couple things for folks to chew on....both good news, of sorts. First, Elon University (where I teach) has a very extensive January term studies abroad program, and one of our classes recently traveled to South Africa where…

I would vote to remove this part of the constitution. However, I don't think we'd ever find 60% of NC voters to do so. I think that politicians know this. I think that most politicians, even ones truly sympathetic to this cause, would not…

Hi Joe, yes, you are right (I also mentioned this in my opening discussion). However, the fact that NC still includes this in the constitution (along with the overtly religious Preamble favoring theism over non-theism) encourages bigotry and…

Hi Tony,

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I don't check my atheist nexus page very often. We did start a group here in Elizabeth City.  It's on meetupl.com.  It's called "Elizabeth City Freethinkers".  If you're ever in the area for an event, feel free to stop by. Oh and join if you can, we're actually up to 23 members.

Check us out, we get together to have fun, not specifically on religious holidays but on days we choose for what ever reason comes up, our next big shindig will be to celebrate the 41st birthday of one of the members. We have 19 members so far, more are always welcome.
