Punishing the Many for the Crimes of a Few

I'm a student at the University of Mississippi and live in Stockard Hall, a residence hall of eleven floors that houses roughly 500 students. From the beginning of this year, a few idiots have had the bright idea of pulling fire alarms in the dead of the night. What that means is a mandatory evacuation of every student in the hall -- for me, a 20-flight trip down the stairs -- and waiting outside for the fire department to arrive, search the building, and then lecture us for half an hour about…See More

Cursed by a Street Preacher!

As I was minding my own business this Friday afternoon on campus (U. Mississippi) waiting for calculus class, I was accosted by a street preacher. Before talking to me, I overheard the man talking with another student a few metres away. It seemed that he had the poor chap convinced. Anyway, when he was done with that student, he began talking with my friend I was waiting with, a Christian, about "salvation" and such. After being reassured that my friend would certainly go to Heaven upon death,…See More

Early Morning Musings, and Free Will

I got up early this morning (around 7.30 or so -- that's early for me) to watch my little sister until my mum got home from work. What with the recent weather (storms and rain for three days, yay!) I've actually managed to get some decent sleep. With that came very vivid dreams, including one lucid one that I remembered for at least two days. Anyway, my mind is insanely full early in the morning like this, and for my tired state I think I'm fairly coherent right now, so I'm going to explain my…See More

OK, this is my first post, but it's 1am and I'm a little tired. Need to be quick, as I'm not supposed to have PC access right now....My family currently requires me to go to church with them twice a week: once on Sunday morning, and once on either Sunday or Wednesday night. That often interferes with my work schedule, but they don't care. They'll just kick me out of the house if I refuse (not joking, sadly).Tonight I sat through an hour of the youth pastor explaining the primary tenants of…See More

I told mine about a year and a half ago and they completely freaked out. They had already mandated that I go to church twice a week (which interfered with my work schedule, but who cares about that, right?), and they would take my car, phone, and internet for a week if I refused. I actually recorded the conversation when I told them in case I ever needed to use it for anything... they're Southern Baptist fundamentalists, so of course nothing I said made any sense to them.

They keep trying to get me to go home on the weekends, yet they make me go to church when I go home... I'm just trying to see how long it will take them to realize that if they want that, they're going to have to give up on that little venture.

They still owe me $22 for my copy of The God Delusion that they stole... <_/body>

Ooooh! Secret info, cool stuff.

HAH about the credits not going through, ain't that a bitch? Most of my AP credits went through except one, so I actually was exempt from required courses last year. This year is 2x more awrsurm just cos I can focus on my double major (International Studies - Africa, and Sociology w/ an Anthro minor). Much respect for going premed.

And yeah, the freedom feels SO good. Last year I felt so liberated on Sunday mornings, waking up after a crazy party knowing I wouldn't have to put on stockings with skirts to go to church...and when I went home, my parents knew I was atheist so they didn't force me to go. Have you told yours?
