- I was born in Brazil and raised as an evangelical christian and only studied at private christian schools until half way through college, believe it or not the first time of my life that I read anything about/from Darwin was in a bookstore in Sao Paulo in my early twenties, and then I started to wonder "what else there is out there that they didn't tell me about or purposely hid from me?", and from this point and on I understood what religion is for and I realized that I am not a believer, and I never really was, because all I can remember is being afraid of the judgment and the punishment and all those things; I never wanted to pray or to sing along, and I never really had it my mind that those things would change the course of anything, but at the same time I was afraid of punishment. I believe my total 'deconvertion' from religion and took about 5 to 6 years but during this time had sometimes thought that some of the things I was doing were wrong or sins, and yet I wasn't doing anything crazy, but I was now drinking alcohol, going to concerts, and just living like a regular young professional, until I got on to a point that I don't have to be afraid of any punishment for living my own life the way I choose to, to be happy with everything I experience and see the positive side of things and most importantly, to deal with the consequences of my own actions, without asking for miracles when things get out of my control; now I'm an atheist and life is good.
