About that research... if monogamy reduces social problems, then being single reduces them even more!  Oh wait, then we'd be telling people how to live their lives, and that's wrong.  Irony.

Srsly?  Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't go to the circus ever again.  But abusive?  No more abusive than living in a society where people are treated like shit every day for being the wrong race or gender or religion etc.…

Well, PETA treat women worse than (other) animals, so they can go eat a hat. But there is a small point here.  You could look up the particular circus and see if they have a history of treating animals properly or mistreating them.  Zoos…

Yes, being more active makes religious people feel more religious.  It is rewarding for them to get together and be religious.   On the other hand, I think it is important for "us" to get together and be non-religious. …

About Me
Hello. My name is Andy, and I'm a Nerd. I occasionally do something amusing if you watch closely enough. Oh, and leave me a funny comment - I love them!

I'm genderqueer, so you can't really call me a woman or a man, but you can call me a nerd, and you can use the pronouns ze/hir (instead of he/him or she/her).

My Values:

*ATHEIST NEXUS RULES & GUIDELINES
*Not feeding the Trolls

  1. Ethics is Central: The most central human issue in our lives is creating a more humane environment.
  2. Ethics Begins with Choice: Creating a more humane environment begins by affirming the need to make significant choices in our lives.
  3. We Choose to Treat Each Other as Ends, not Means: To enable us to be whole in a fragmented world, we choose to treat each other as unique individuals having intrinsic worth.
  4. We Seek to Act with Integrity: Treating one another as ends requires that we learn to act with integrity. This includes keeping commitments, and being honest, open, caring and responsive.
  5. We are Committed to Educate Ourselves: Personal progress is possible, both in wisdom and social life. Learning how to build ethical relationships and cultivate a humane community is a life-long endeavor.
  6. Self Reflection and Our Social Nature Require Us to Shape a More Humane World: Growth of the human spirit is rooted in self-reflection, but can only come to full flower in community. This is because people are social, needing both primary relationships and larger supportive groups to become fully human. Our social nature requires that we reach beyond ourselves to decrease suffering and increase creativity in the world.
  7. Democratic Process is Essential to Our Task: The democratic process is essential to a humane social order because respect for the worth of persons requires democratic process, which elicits and allows a greater expression of human capacities.
  8. Life Itself Inspires a Natural "Religious" Response: Although awareness of impending death intensifies the human quest, the mystery of life itself, and the need to belong, are the primary factors motivating human religious response.

Genderqueer atheists can sometimes feel like we're each the only one on the planet, but now we have a Facebook group to bring us together!

My Blog: "Nerd is my Gender"

I love 3D movies.

3D is like the best thing that’s ever happened to movies since ever, in my opinion.

Some people hate it.  Some people physically can’t handle it.  Theaters should have 2D showings as well, for those reasons.  And for those who like going in mixed groups, there are 2D glasses to flatten out 3D movies: http://www.2d-glasses.com/

But with all the anti-3D sentiments out there, I thought I’d bring balance to the force by sharing my perspective.  Which is that I love 3D, and don’t really see the point in even going to theaters to see a 2D movie anymore.  I can see those on my computer screen any day of the week.

Vicodin

iragray:

I just want to say that I may not being able to get back to everyone immediately or write too comprehensively for the next couple of days since I’m coming down from anesthesia and I’m on Vicodin. I’ve had Vicodin before, and, for those who don’t know, it’s a dissociative, not a pain killer. You still feel pain. It just doesn’t make sense to you anymore.

Vicodin did absolutely nothing for me when I got my wisdom teeth removed, and I had much better luck with ibuprophen.  I wonder why?

"If a woman’s employer is a charity or a hospital that has a religious objection to providing..."

“If a woman’s employer is a charity or a hospital that has a religious objection to providing contraceptive services as part of their health plan, the insurance company -– not the hospital, not the charity -– will be required to reach out and offer the woman contraceptive care free of charge, without co-pays and without hassles.”

-

President Obama, 2/10/12

Explains the Consumerist: The result will be that religious organizations won’t have to pay for these services, and no religious institution will have to provide these services directly. Let me repeat: These employers will not have to pay for, or provide, contraceptive services. But women who work at these institutions will have access to free contraceptive services, just like other women, and they’ll no longer have to pay hundreds of dollars a year that could go towards paying the rent or buying groceries.

[Warning: anti-queer bigotry]

LOLgod seems to be no more moral than the people it mocks.  I’m unsubscribing.

As Christ Goldman says:

Tumblr has you covered with more original and humorous atheist jokes than LOLGod can supply… and most Tumblrers(?) actually have the decency to point links to the sources of their finds, which LOLGod doesn’t do. I think it’s time that our community puts the unabashed gay-bashers to rest in the graveyard of failed hateful websites.

I’m so sick of this “fuck the poor”...

I’m so sick of this “fuck the poor” propaganda.  And don’t even get me started on the racial angle of using fried chicken for this bullshit!

victorianaaa:

Even if the prices were accurate (please tell me where to $1.96 chicken breasts!) it’d still be bullshit, but I looked up the prices for fun, or something. 2011 price for a 10 piece bucket, 2 sides, and 4 biscuits is about $16.99 and here’s a screenshot of a grocery order with all the stuff above from my nearest grocery store (which is more expensive than walmart, but I wouldn’t subtract more than $10 for the difference). That came to $46.69.

How to get your brother to leave you alone on FB forever, without even trying!

Posted on November 30, 2011 at 2:00pm 18 Comments

For background info, my brother has been posting his daily Bible reading on FB, for over 60 days now, and I haven't said a word.  Finally, I thought I'd join in on my own wall (not even on his!)  Here's the text-only version below.  For the full thing: https://www.facebook.com/Andy.TehNerd/posts/2428765833424

Andy Semler

Join me while I read the Bible through Day 1 of "Historical" reading plan. I mean, all the other cool kids are doing it... http://bible.us/r/6.1.5t

Andy Semler

For the curious, Matthew 6:1 doesn't apply to me, since I don't take this book as a religious authority, so I can flaunt my studies all I like without being a hypocrite.

My mom

The whole bible applies to you.

Andy Semler

Anyway, it's off to a good start: cute creation myth. Not as interesting as some of the Egyptian ones, but less annoying than the Greek/Roman ones. I still think the Native American myths are the best.

Andy Semler

Whoever wrote Gen 2 could have stood to notice the logical impossibility of asking someone not to eat of a tree which grants knowledge of good and evil BEFORE they have knowledge of good and evil. How could they possibly have known that disobedience was evil? Srsly.

Mom

Don't stick them peas up yer nose Andy!!

Andy Semler

Wish we still had talking animals. Primates who know sign-language just isn't as fulfilling a conversation.

Mom's friend

I know if we had talking animals all the little cutesy Yorkies that get dressed up in all those ridiculous outfits would be like, "WTeff?"

Thanks for commenting.  You have been around here longer than me so I thought you might know.  I keep thinking nexus is on autopilot....  Now the LGBT group is open but the Atheist News group is "awaiting approval".  The veg group was yesterday - I don't know about now.  All very strange....

I can sympathize with nerdiness. I personally identify as an academic Otaku, though I never used that as replacement for my non-gender self-identification. The replacement makes sense though, traditionally, the nerd has been undersexualized. Nice seeing you on the nexus, and if you ever want to talk philosophy, queer theory and issues, or whatever.
