Just had one of those days where I didn't feel like even getting out of bed. So I thought about faking sick to go home from school. Got to school, and ended up sick for real. They wouldn't even allow…Continue

It's late at night, I'm wide awake, and all week I've either had Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys stuck in my head, or I've had One Step Closer by Linkin Park stuck in my head. So I though…Continue

Joseph P said… Well, they never get as far as teaching actual Creationism. That would be so flagrantly in violation of the First Amendment that even the conservative nut-jobs on the Supreme Court would rule against it.
The most they pass is laws requiring that teachers read a statement about how the Theory of Evolution (they always leave out the Natural Selection part, which is the part that's theory; Evolution is really just an observed fact) is just one of many equal explanations for the origin of the human species ... or some steaming pile of crap, to that effect.
There was the big attempt to slip Intelligent Design into the classroom, in the famous court case in Dover, Pennsylvania, but it was ruled to be Creationism and was laughed out of court. If anyone tried to teach actual Biblical Creationism in the classroom, today, the school board in question would go into damage control so quickly that there wouldn't be anything left to sue into smithereens.
Joseph P said… Yeah, good strategy, while you can't do anything about it.
I'm a politics junky, so I pay attention to all of the stuff that the fundie, political right is trying to inflict on the country. I would be freaking out about it, if my state was doing more stuff that blatantly violated the first amendment of the US Constitution.
I've heard that Tennessee is next on the list for the repeatedly failed attempts to slip Creationism in the back door, into the science program of public schools. I'm surprised they didn't try for Tennessee sooner, given its history in the Scopes Monkey Trial.
I'd be going a bit berserk, in your place.
Joseph P said… North Carolina is pretty sane, as long as you stay within 5 miles of a major city. You wouldn't even know you were in the southeast, if you stayed in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary), the Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Highpoint), or the Charlotte area.
Well, the humidity might give away which region of the country you're in. It freaking sucks. I'm seriously contemplating moving back to the Chicago area, for the weather.
I'm kind of pissed about the passage of the anti-gay marriage amendment this spring. North Carolina had been immune to a lot of the insanity that you get in other conservative states. Hell, we even went for Obama. I guess all of the liberals stayed home in 2010, though, so we ended up with the current batch of assholes in the state congress.
Isn't that sort of thing business as usual in Tennessee?
Joseph P said… @Joseph P: No, Stone Sour is not a Christian group.
Sorry, didn't see your response, initially. I was expecting a comment back on my wall, if you were going to say anything, and I didn't get an e-mail notification, because it didn't hit my wall.
Hmm, I always got the impression that they were Christian. Weird. Bother seemed to have a lot of Christian symbology woven into the lyrics. I mean, I love the song, but it always seemed a bit loaded.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, since I love Christian mythology. I love the movie, Constantine. It probably has something to do with my having grown up Catholic. Catholics are more into really delving into the consequences of their worldview. Maybe it's the exorcism (which is held as an important holy rite), the literal transubstantiation of the Eucharist ... the crazy pageantry. I dunno.
So, how's Tennessee treating you?
