Christian child turned atheist around 17-19 years old. I love Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. I desire reason and grow weary of the massive amounts of religious delusion surrounding me. I do NOT feel tolerant of it. I would be just as tolerant about an entire community of people on drugs. To me, there isnt much of a difference!

There is a holy Pirate weekend at the Maryland RennFest! Sept. 27th&28th. I'm making a pilgrimage. ;) There'll be...well, no rum, but plenty of mead, wine, beer, and cider!
Me a shrink?!! Have you checked my videos on my profile? I'm nuts, just ask my boss! I'll get bored at work, so I'll fill an empty plastic pop bottle with oxygen and acetylene then blast it out of our shop! Cool rocket, hell of a bang! Ah well, I guess if Bush and the neocons are sane, the sane are nuts!
As for the drugs and religion, the way some religions (Christian, Jew, Islam, etc..) worship together (singing, screaming, chanting, drumming, etc...) will stimulate the same areas of the brain as drugs. Studies also show a correlation between highly active DRD4 dopamine receptors in the brain and belief in spirits, psychics and such. Schizophrenics have extremely active DRD4 receptors, by about 500%, and very sceptical people tend to have the least active receptors. Having never been religious, as my parents were atheists, I have always found the very religious to be rather stoned.
As for the thing about it being fine for consenting idiots, oops, I mean adults, believing what ever they wish, I've had a discussion going on this site asking "Should Religion Be Banned?". The general consensus being that it would just drive them underground, and give them an excuse to kill us non-believers. As a Canadian, my view is a little different from you Americans. To start with, more of us are atheist, by proportion, and our current Conservative government is a mix of fascist bible thumpers, Catlicks, and even Buddhists. But with our multi party parliamentary system, the Conservative party formed a minority government, and were out numbered by the opposition parties (Liberal party, Quebec nationalists, New Democratic Party, Green party and some independents), and have not been able to get anything passed with out co-opting some members of other parties. They have not, for instance, been able to pass a bill giving foetus's equal rights under our Charter of Rights And Freedoms - YET. Things are changing though, as the Conservatives are forcing an early election because they think they will be able to increase their seats in Parliament.
Any way, I seem to be ranting, or at least babbling...
You are welcome to sound off to me at any time, but be aware, I am a pot smoking, bourbon (or single malt scotch) drinking anarchist/anti-theist. Listen to me at your own peril!
I am here to make friends and obtain a support group composed of SANE, THINKING people, so THANKS for the welcome! I agree completely with you about the AA meetings. Religion is just another addiction. I am reading a book on addiction at the moment, in fact, and the parallels are uncanny. Addicts do not respond to reasonable discussion because they are addicted at an EMOTIONAL level, rather than a THINKING level. I could go on and on... I disagree with your saying that its 'fine' that people are religious as long as... because they inevitably VOTE for people like BUSH. Drug addicts electing druggies. Bush puts tax dollars into his 'faith based initiative'. And Christians inevitably do inflict fear of hellfire upon their children. All of it makes me want to vomit. Dont ask me why I am so particularly upset and sensitive to this. I mean, I get physically nautious over it all. I think I need a fucking therapist. LOL. I know its kind of forward, but uh, will you be my net shrink? :D JK.
Have you ever been to a AA or NA meeting? They replace their drugs and booze with coffee, cigarettes and god! I think many people do get a drug like high from their religious delusions, which is fine, so long as they don't push it on other people, nor inflict it upon children's developing minds.
Oh, and welcome!
