I had heard of the Hitchhikers' series, but never read it until I became an adult and found it indirectly. My husband loves to go to library book sales to get bargains, especially Science Fiction/Fantasy, which we both like. He picks up stuff…

I'm not completely sure how old I was, but I think I was about nine or ten years old when I was first exposed to Douglas Adams. A wonderful couple from Britain moved into the apartment a few doors down from ours, and my mother befriended the…

It was the radio series. When was it? Late seventies or early eighties, I think. I was living in Australia at the time and the ABC broadcast an episode every afternoon. I didn't pay much attention at first - I used to have the radio babbling in…

About Me
Hi, thanks for popping by.

What are you likely to want to know? Hmm. By trade I'm a civil servant and the rest of the time I can be found at a PC, strumming a guitar, occasionally getting round to recording some of the strummings with the aforementioned PC (some of the questionable results are on my website), getting slightly sideways at festivals and procrastinating.

I'm also a trade union rep, particularly focussing on LGB&T issues.

I think I've been an atheist since a young age but didn't realise it until I started reading Douglas Adams. Since then I've become gradually more fervent and now, thanks to Christopher Hitchens, think of my self as an anti-theist. I feel theism is a huge waste of human time and energy, something we've outgrown and a distraction we could well do without.

I also feel that without religion there would be no homophobia.

On a lighter note, I'm a member of CAMRA, a bit of a pedant (I'm not saying which bit) and have been known to listen to Fish era Marillion.

We ain't half got it easy in Britain.

While perusing this 'ere site I've seen many posts and blogs discussing 'coming out' as an atheist. Initially I was a tad miffed by this. I knew that the situation in other parts of the world was much worse than it is here but I don't think I realised quite how ghastly it actually is.

I saw references to coming out as atheist and thought, 'You what? Coming out as gay was a big step, and came after much stalling, self-doubt and soul searching. It was a very big, and hard, step to… Continue

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to withdraw support for Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, and education focused, yet ardently creationist establishment."

A short film and petition on the Amnesty site: http://www.protectthehuman.com/tankman

It's staggering that this event has fallen so far from the public's attention. I think I've heard it mentioned twice in the last ten years.

From the organiser's press release:

Hello chap - can't possibly imagine how you came upon the name of 'Socket'.
Guess you're right about it being a tad clunky here, but the place seems young, so hopefully it'll grow out of it.
Amuses me that that some of our 'Bill Payers' are theists, kinda poetic justice there...

Hello
The best way to introduce yourself is to make full use of the MY PAGE facility that you were given when joining Atheist Nexus.

Write the basics there, including maybe how you came to know that the explanations of atheism and atheists to explain the world are backed by deep commonsense, science, theoretical physics, etc. [And that by contrast, the religionists rely on hollow 'goddidit' answers and absolute belief in fake chronicles put together by Bronze Age desert dwellers at a time when most people were illiterate and independent thinking scarcely allowed].
Also, do visit the Nexus group ORIGINS where correct explanations for our atheistic world are provided and discussed.
