The truth is in here, not out there

Neil Gaiman on freedom of speech

Very powerful letter here. Excerpt:

Freedom to write, freedom to read, freedom to own material that you believe is worth defending means you're going to have to stand up for stuff you don't believe is worth defending, even stuff you find actively distasteful, because laws are big blunt instruments that do not differentiate between what you like and what you don't, because prosecutors are humans and bear grudges and fight for re-election, because one person's obscenity is another person's art.

Lovely Carl Sagan quote

The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what’s true.

I really should stay away from Amazon. I spend far too much money on there. Today, my purchases included Geek Love, Geek Logik, and Geek Chic. Those will all go nicely with the "GeeKISSexy" t-shirt I just purchased from - where else? - ThinkGeek.com

Greetings, Snakeophelia! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

I lived in S.C. for about twenty years, but born and raised in the DC burbs. Graduated from Univ. of S.C. I can relate to your experiences in S.C. Philly isn't to far from the DC area. I'm organizer of Fun Loving Atheists of Maryland and if you are ever in the area during one of our meetups, you are welcome to join us.

Thanks for filling out the survey, and I am glad you found it interesting. The data set is rich, and I am beginning to really pour through the comments.

As for publication, do you have any suggestions? I would like to get a piece out to the popular press soon, but I have no "ins" or agent to get anything submitted to a Wired or Slate, etc. I am open to any ideas, so send them along.

I'm inclined to think so too (about Jackson), though that book and the short story "The Lottery" are all I have read by her. I want to read Hangsaman, as I've heard that is a really good one. There are just not enough hours in the day.

Glad to find another EHC fan. They seem to be few and far between.

Hello Snakeophelia! Thanks for the note. I am feeling much less lonely now that I am on this site. What a lovely relief to be in a community of freethinkers.
