Ok, so it goes without saying that I think the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, and all other religious books should be considered fiction.  Now, how the hell do I convince others of this?We were having a discussion at work (i am a teacher) about fiction and non-fiction.  A student asked a teacher if the bible was fiction or non-fiction.  The teacher said the student should ask his parent.  I thought that was a cheap ass answer, I mean the kid deserves a straightforward answer.Another teacher said…See More

Santa Clause is not real?

Posted on December 26, 2010 at 6:57pm 2 Comments

I asked my family this weekend why they as Christians feel it is OK to lie to their children about Santa Clause.  I explained that, to me, it seemed quite hypocritical that one of the Christian tenants is not to lie, but yet in celebration of the very beginning of Christianity Christians lie to their children about this man who brings toys. The answer I got was because it brings so much joy to the children.  So, is it one of those "ends justifies the means" types of…

He was sworn into office on the Koran! Bugger!

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 10:56pm 6 Comments

My dad (Christian) said to me today after hearing that a person had been sworn into office on the Koran, "That is so stupid! I can't believe they swore him in to office on the Koran! This is a Christian nation!" I silently thought, " I can't believe they use the Bible to swear people in all the time!"

You know, it's interesting, that a person can't just take an oath on their own - like their word is not good enough and is meaningless unless it is put on the bible (or Koran). When did… Continue

Hello Sicile Daresh, and welcome to this friendly meeting place with freethinkers who recognise that religion is a huge deception aimed at controlling vulnerable superstitious people, including defenceless children; and
how tragic and inexcusable it is that women and minorities have been oppressed these last two thousand years and even longer.

Not really a secret but I am keeping them close to my chest because some of the themes could get a fatwa put on my head. so I don't want to publish to much in a public forum until they are done or almost done. I will invite you as a friend and send you my email address privately if you would like to know more.

Dear Sicile
I can tell you about some videos to watch that have been recommended within the "Origins" group. There are many of them.

e.g. excellent on Darwin
http://www.atheistnexus.org/group/originsuniverselifehumankindanddarwin/forum/topics/stanford-university-lectures

If I trawl back through the early discussion topics on "Origins" (especially around November 2008 to February 2009) I can find numerous good videos placed there about the Universe and everything else.

But what I suggest is this. Rewrite your message as a discussion question topic, asking the members of "Origins". Richard Healy could be among those who respond as regards the video answer. That way others too will benefit from the advice given about books, films, videos etc.

So prepare your topic message and post it as a discussion topic. If you need help to how to post it, ask me of course.
Good luck and best wishes, Terry.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments Sicile! I certainly would recommend coming out with the atheism...when you're ready of course. After my deconversion, church was/is the most uncomfortable place in the world for me. If I didn't come out with it to the family, I would be expected to go & I just can't do that...not even as a social gathering. Nothwithstanding, I still like Anselms quote from long ago, Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future. The next step for me now is bridging the silence & actually talking about the "Elephant in the Living Room." Gently of course.

Hi Sicile,
Sorry about the delay in replying, but I got your message on my smart-phone last night (time difference Ireland - US I guess ) and I needed a laptop to answer properly. No problem with info. though.
A few clarifying questions for you though;
When you say you would live to visit the northern section do you mean the geographic north or Northern Ireland (part of the UK).
Again when you refer to the north, do you mean the very north or just north of where you were the last visit?
What Airport are you flying to or is that still open to choice?
What kind of holiday are you planning? Will you rent a car, a bike or use public transport? Are you planning to stay in hotels, bed & breakfasts, hostels, just camp or use a mixture of these? What are you looking for in a holiday? Night-life, beaches, mountainsides, museums, scenery, festivals or what?
Finally, when are you coming and how long will you be hear?
If you can let me know some or all of the above together with any other info you think relevant, I'll help with any info I can.
regards,
Jack

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 7 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
