I think it comes down to grappling with the limited economic and social opportunities that exist for people of color in American society.  The dominance of the Black Church and Latino religious traditions is strongly tied to economic…

Secularism/humanism/atheism based on a white heterosexual patriarchal point of view most certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Often that point of view leads to arrogance and dismissal of other non-believers who happen to not be a heterosexual white…

Prayer Warriors and Freethinkers (on the Texas Freethought Con)

By Sikivu HutchinsonFrom The New HumanismThe prayer warriors have descended on the Crenshaw parking lot in South L.A. The first sentry, a slight man in athletic shorts, weaves through the parked cars on an old Schwinn. He flags down the driver of a T-Bird. They exchange quick greetings then bow their heads and join hands, oblivious, for the moment, to the crash of…See More

Executing a man who is wrongfully convicted is murder. I'm not saying I know whether he is innocent or not, or whether he committed prior crimes or not. I don't know. But for the crime that he was executed for, the evidence seems so paltry…

There have been 273 post-conviction exonerations in the US (innocence project).  That Troy Davis was executed with minimal and unreliable evidence, and part of the process involved him having to prove his innocence, is criminal.  I…

Standing With Troy Davis As a Non-Believer

By Sikivu HutchinsonThis is a day of outrage for all who believe in justice and morality. The pending execution of Georgia Death Row inmate Troy Davis is an egregious reminder of the vicious cycle of immoral lynch mob justice that masquerades as due process in the United States, the exceptionalist "Christian Nation." With 25% of the world’s prison population, the U.S. has devolved into the largest penitentiary on the planet. For poor people of color, the revolving door of incarceration often…See More

Queer Youth of Color Beyond Faith from the "New Humanism"

The West & the Rest of Us: Atheism & Sexism 101

Posted on July 21, 2011 at 12:13pm 3 Comments

By Sikivu Hutchinson

At a youth media literacy conference I organized recently, I was fortunate enough to experience the performance of an extremely gifted youth band whose co-lead singer is an Asian American female guitarist. At one point during the concert she tentatively introduced a song she had written about sexism by saying that it “kind of does still exist today.” I was struck by her qualified intro to the song. She is one of the few young women of color musicians fronting a… Continue

It took me 51 years to shed the weight of religion. I feel better physically and mentally. What is an additional inspiration is to find a segment of people in our community who are critical thinkers and non-believers. I am so glad to be out of the "Amen & Hallelujah!" corner. Pura Vida (Pure Life) from this point on!

Hey Sikivu,

Thank you for the reply,

I am going to Nova Southeastern University. At first, I was thinking about education either. However, I realized that no matter what, you end up teaching. Second, the reason why people are so ignorant/ intolerant of folks who are freethinkers, humanists or atheists is because they're ignorant or uneducated. Lastly, I noticed the declining numbers of males especially Blacks and Hispanics that are not being educated and I knew I had to do something about it. So, I feel like it is a necessity that I got involved. Besides, it will make me a better writer for my position as a Black Queer Atheist.

I just wanted to stop by and tell you that GOD... No, (LOL) but you ARE an inspiration to me. I have been a free thinker for quite a while, but I had yet to be very open about it, until about a week ago. I recently put my name and posted my picture on this website. It's all because of people like you out there blazing a trail that we hidden black free thinkers can join you on! Thanks!

You're quite welcome sister. I have an extensive jazz and classical flute collection, so if you ever need a recommendation I'll be more than happy to try to accommodate your request. I finally met and played a duet with Hubert Laws at the National Flute Convention in August of 2009....I snuck up behind him while he was signing autographs and played his version of "Amazing Grace" note for note. He immediately picked up his flute and we kept jammin'. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was a non believer! Peace and critical thinking Sikivu Rob H. blog: The African American Agnostic
