Welcome indeed. This place is a breath of fresh air for the days when you feel like nobody in society has any sense about them. I found this site through one of the many atheist podcasts that I listen to. If you haven't already done so I'd…
Seth, this video brings back some interesting memories... a lot of stuff here I haven't thought about in a long time.
I went through the whole AWANA program as a kid, and my parents were leaders to boot. In fact (because of my wife's…
The good works of charity are a smoke screen. Take the case of Mother Theresa in Bombay, people opened their wallets and contributed to help the poor and unwed mothers. Almost all the money was shipped back to Rome to buy real property and gold…
Good post, Mag. It happened to most of us. Not only time was wasted but money and human resources. How about real estate—all that land sitting there with the painted glass and somber atmosphere.
When religious people smarted up, it has to…
Fan of the site? Do you want to force me to produce more content? The goal is to use this networking site to help generate great ideas for future shows, and have a place where fans can make suggestions and requests.
I like how Lady Macbeth kicks the dog out of the castle, saying, "Out, damn'd spot! Out, I say!" I'm guessing he peed on the carpet or something. Hard to tell, though, with all that Elizabethan English going on.
Another good…
CFI Portland (the Portland, OR, affiliate of the Center for Inquiry) has a Rational Sunday School once a month, but it doesn't look like CFI Pittsburgh has such an event. Perhaps you could start one?
I remember wasting time in something like…
Wow, I agree. Good post. Many members here at A/N expressed the same chagrin and feeling of lost time. My worst remorse is all the sex I missed out on by ladies I really dug, but told me "I'm not that kinda girl."
I've been a…
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it....Could you imagine what the world would be like (or us, that were raised in highly religious homes, more specifically) if we hadn't wasted so many Sundays being bored out of our minds learning…
Never did anything with the name awana, but we were made to memorize different bible verses, as well as the books of the bible in order, and then stand in front of the whole congregation and recite them. We were given small prizes if we were able to…

I'm so sick of that "Not of This World" bullshit. Those stickers on people's cars make my commute suck even harder.
I'm one of the few ex-christians who actually read the bible. I grew up going to Awana, youth group, and any other christian function that would give me a piece of candy or the opportunity to hang out with chicks and set my homework aside. Christianity was cool if you grew up a racist homophobe who enjoyed small town living and the occasional damning of a community member who hadn't been saved by our lord Jesus the Carpenter. How could I deny his existance? He was in Ben Herr for fuck's sake and that was enough for me.
Before college I traveled the world and my mind exploded out the back of my skull. People outside America are happy? I had to learn more...
All of a sudden I felt like a spent the better part of my life as an ignorant asshole and I vowed to educate myself on anything and everything that came my way. Philosophy, psychology, myth and symbol... anything to help me better understand the role of religion in society. I lived in Singapore for a good six months and then got a crash course in tolerance living in San Francisco for five years.
I'm happy to say I've been an Atheist for a good five years now (the previous five as an agnostic) and it's a wonderful thing. I now focus my attention on offering teenagers and young adults alternatives to a religious lifestyle in the hope that they'll adopt a rational way of thinking a little earlier than I did.
