Thanks on recieving the Monty Miller

Yesterday I received the official announcement that I was the winner of the Inaugural Monty Miller Award presented to me by Atheist Nexus I must say that I am somewhat humbled by the experience. I didn’t set out to win any awards with my blogging (some readers may even raise an eyebrow, having had my inconsistent editing thrust at them), how many bloggers really do? It is, however, a…See More

About Me
I can trace my departure from religion and then God from age 15. I read two books:

The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail and the Messianic Legacy, they are precursors and source material for Dan Brown's Davinci Code. They are historical potboilers but probably not worth reading. What they did was break my Catholic conditioning or a least began that process. They presented historical facts and biblical facts that had not been brought to my attention in my religious education, they started me questioning.

My transfer from a Catholic High School to a State School in my senior years contributed in the sense that I recieved dogmatic reinforcement only when going to Church on Sundays or when going on Youth Group Retreats. I stopped going to church regularly when I hit eighteen. That and I lost two friends to the Potters House Cult and that turned me off the Happy Clappy mob.

I left home at Nineteen and went to University and my philosophical leanings turned towards Buddhism, and at this stage probably would have considered myself an agnositic deist. To tell you the truth though, at this time Study and work were my priorities and I didn't spend that much time on religious introspection.

Fast forward to 2006 and I am pushing myself to broaden my horizons, I start investigating Buddhism as a basic philosophy without the religious garb. Late 2006 I have an encounter with a street preacher which leads to me investigating his claims, and again forcing me to look at the god question again. Then while traveling came across the God Delusion bought it and began investigating the claims of theists/atheists.

In 2007 I shook of the last shackles and nothing much else changed, although I became more vocal as an atheist - I guess you could say my consciousness was raised.

So there was no tragedy just coincidences, study and thought that brought me to where I am today a Humanist and an Atheist.

One of my readers suggested I take a gander at the media release form Hillsong on Mercy Ministries, it is interesting to note that this release was apparently amended from earlier in the day -the previous release was apparently harsher. I have inserted my comments below:

It is with deep regret and sadness we have to inform you that Mercy Ministries in Australia is no longer in operation. No, no. While I always try to test the water before I dive in, I've been doing that for an extended period now. Mainly due to browser issues though. I thought I'd sent a friend request previously, but I guess the browser I was using then didn't cope with the submission.

My more recent activity is due to my getting a newer browser arrangement set up.

It actually wasn't as expensive as I expected. Our flight from Sydney was about $1400, TAM registration cheaper for me as I'm a student, and I shared hotels with 2 others, so that also brings down the cost, and we spent another week after TAM in San Diego and LA. All up I's say it was about $3000 for our 2 weeks. Well worth it for sure!!! :)
