The oldest of my three twin daughters (I'll explain it all some day) is open about her lack of belief in the supernatural. She has alluded to some strong words being spoken in social studies debates but surprisingly little open bigotry. I say surprising since her high school is nestled firmly in the belly button lint immediately below the bible belt. Not My God focuses on persecution and hatred of atheists. I’m not saying that I equate anti-atheism rhetoric with segregated bathrooms under Jim Crow laws or genocides. What I am trying to say is that many people in the US hate atheists, all else being equal. I don’t often hear from atheists who are politically/socially conservative. I know they’re out there, albeit probably much fewer than their more liberal counterparts. I’ve heard at least one atheist say that he’s a truck driver, voted for Bush twice, etc., and no one would guess that he’s an atheist. True, I wouldn’t have.
