I got a Christmas card today. That's so nice, right? We all love getting cards. Well, this one was a bit different... First, I must explain the card, then I will include what was written in it below.…Continue
"I need to get that "dear christian" pamphlet. It will say everything i want to say, and it may help because it isn't coming from me. When i deal with relatives older than me, well, it's pointless. They start shaking their…"
"Hi Sara, I just popped in here and saw your post. I'm having a somewhat similar problem with my "born-again-nutjob" niece. Here's my story:
She knows that I am an atheist and a few years ago I told her not to send me any of her…"
"Thank you to everybody who replied to this! Nice thought provoking answers from you guys. :)
After reading the responses from you guys, people who understand where I'm coming from, and talking with my family, I have decided that the best…"
"I usually don't hold grudges unless whatever is happening gets to be too much. There is usually a breaking point where I give up trying to be the nice person that everyone expects me to be. Giving my address to a stranger was my breaking point.…"
"Its hard to give advise because we do not know the FULL extend of the relationship you have
with your grandmother.
Honestly, I would send a letter back to Dorothy to the address of the Church with a note.
"Thanx for the card.…"
"My dad's father leaves me alone, thankfully. Heck, despite the fact I live in the same state as him, he attempts no contact with me, and sends cards for me to my parents' address instead. I understand not wanting to deal with a family…"
"I agree about the fact that passivity can be bad, but it really depends on your perspective. If the card was from someone you saw and spoke with often, someone who you were close with and wanted to maintain a good relationship with, then I…"
I got a birthday card from my Catholic aunt one year. On the front was a picture of a anguished Jeebus, blue eyes looking at the sky (it could only have been sappier if it was rendered on black velvet) The caption was, “Praying for…"
"Wow, your aunt and my grandmother could be the best of friends. I get cards exactly like that, passive-aggressive underlining and all, for most big occasions. I also worry that if she found out about my atheism that I would wake up one morning…"
"Oh honey, I came here to post about almost the exact same thing happening to me, but with my crazy Aunt. Crazy as in she has sent people from the most violently cult-like church in town over to my family's house (she lives almost 3,000 miles…"
"I find it interesting that your parents' old church still send you birthday cards. That's nice of them. :)
Thank you, it's nice to know other people understand my frustrations. Makes me feel like I'm not all that crazy!"
If it is your grandmother that is behind the sending of the christmas card she does not really seem to be open to discussion. Therefor I would concur with Jennifer and Michael, just ignore it and throw it in the trash. There might be…"
"I get birthday cards from my parents' old church. I just check them for checks, cash, and gift cards and then throw them away (one year they gave me a $5 gift card to a religious bookstore so I bought some pencils and a highlighter). I…"
Yeah, lately I've been heading more into hard rock, rather than metal ... stuff like Disturbed. Then ... I dunno, Celtic, modern jazz, Weird Al ... random as hell stuff.
The last good, American rap song that I specifically remember is Gangsta's Paradise. Beyond that, it's just a general acknowledgement that not 100% of rap is garbage. I just don't generally consider it worth the effort of digging through the garbage to find. Most of the good rap I've heard lately is Russian rap off of the GTA4 soundtrack. It's much better than the stuff over here.
I guess I've got a bit broader base, in musical tastes. About the only things I won't listen to are country, rap, and gospel. I guess there are a few songs even in those categories that I can stand, but they're rare.
I'm also an old-school metalhead, from back in the 80's and 90's, thanks to my older brother's influence. Good stuff.
Hello Sara and welcome to this friendly meeting place with freethinkers who recognise that all gods are fictions and that religions exist to control vulnerable superstitious people including defenceless children. How tragic and inexcusable it is that women and minorities have been oppressed these last two thousand years and longer.
