Age of the earth

I told my kids the other day that my great great grandfather was an alien. I told them that our ancestors came to earth about 4 billion years ago on a comet. I've told them the earth is about 4.5 billion years old. My son didn't have a problem with it. He said that he suspected it for years. Now, I've read some stuff on the internet about a young earth. Any ideas?See More

ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN

We debate origins of the Universe, life, Earth, humans, religion, atheism, using common sense, evolution, cosmology, geology, archaeology, and other sciences, to repel biblical creationism and other religious beliefs.

"When I was first seen, the doctor told me there was nothing they could do for me. So, I quit going to the doctor. Didn't see any point. I have 3 kids. Their ages are 21, 17, and 16. I'm waiting for my daughter to turn 18. (She's the…"

"Yea. We've been through that already. They mean well, so it doesn't make me mad. One of them stopped me in the street the other day. She said, "I just wish you could believe in Jesus." She said, "Richard, you're smart.…"

"Does beating the doctor's dead line mean that you've recovered or just got a reprieve? I hope it's the former. Your situation reminds me of my father's. A couple of months before he died (at 91) his very Catholic sister (my aunt)…"

"How are they doing this? Are they simply telling you that they are praying for you to get better? If so, my advice would be to take it in a similar manner that Christopher Hitchens is. He said he appreciates the thought even though it does no…"

I'm surrounded!

On March 18, 2008 I was diagnosed with a terminal illness. I was given a year to live. Happily the doc missed the deadline. Unfortunately, the church ladies have been trying to save my soul. Oh no! It's relentless. I know that they mean well but it's so bothersome. I wish they would afford the same courtesy to my lack of beliefs as I do their superstitions. Sorry. I just needed to vent a little.

Hello Richard, and welcome to this friendly meeting place with freethinkers who recognise how religions and fictional gods deceive and control vulnerable people beginning with innocent children.

Terry Meaden
founder of the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Astronomy, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Evolution, Darwin..." with its 315 discussion topics.
We invite you to join us and 1850 others.
