"I climbed out from a car wreck. Mom called it a miracle. I called it a second chance. Some words lose their original meanings or change. Consider 'holiday'. I doubt many people think 'holy day' when they get the day off,…"
"Rachel, As a victim of some rather severe religious indoctrination and abuse, I can fully appreciate what you are talking about. I have had PTSD and anxiety/panic disorder since about age 8 and it came to a head at about age 26. I was…"
I think Rachael's beef is with her own negative experience with religion, as well as other's she has known who share a negative experience. It's unavoidable to point a negative finger at a belief system you have had a…"
"Rachel, even though I lean more towards atheism then I ever did in the past, I can't seem to totally give up on the Bible or the god-belief. Religion does not scare me - the misuse of it does. An atheist with an attitude can be just as…"
"Rachel, I don't know if this is still relevant to you but if not it is maybe helpful for someone else.
I am currently reading a really good book which is called "Leaving the fold" written by Marlene Winell. It is a guide for…"
"I think it is hard to let it go because most societies all over the world teach some belief in a higher being and this has been going on for all recorded history. A belief in a higher being has always been part of the fabric of every society I…"
"I think sometimes, it is easier to deal with what we have known, and are used to. We were taught certain things when we were young, and letting go of them can be hard. There is a comfort level, and a familiarity, even if we know what we…"
"I'm late to the conversation, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents...
My journey to atheism took about 18 years of searching for god after I left the church. Many things you describe remind me of the things I went through as I deconstructed…"
"Wasn't institutionalized ,but did run away from home at 16 to escape the madness and am a high school dropout because of it. My preacher (a fulltime heart surgeon) told my mom and my brother that my dad was an antichrist. "

I am very perplexed why religion has such a hold on our mids. I have read The God Gene and many other books which say that religion plays some sort of genetic or evolutionary force, but so do a lot of other things that I can CHOOSE TO LIVE WITHOUT.I have chosen to live without religion but it is like a mental illness. I still find my self praying and I can only blaspheme like a mad person to stop it.It is mental illness. I have PTSD from my experiences in the church and if religion were not…See More
You know, what also helped me was knowing that not all religious constructs were as stupid as evangelicalism .... I was exposed to higher criticism in school and always respected it ... I'm talking about studies such as detailed in Bart Ehrman's books such as "Jesus Interrupted" ... if you haven't read any of his work you might enjoy it. He's a former fundy who went on to receive his Doctorate in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and who is a well known and respected Bible scholar today and, a non believer.
Point being, when you see how silly and immature evangelical theology or any theology targeted for the masses is, you can easily dismiss it.
Mark's gospel says jesus was crucified on Passover morning at around 9 AM, John's gospel says he was crucified at around 2PM the day BEFORE ... which was right? ... No evangelical would ever attempt to answer me ... but if such basic information could be in error what is the basis for trusting anything written in the book ... If there were any integrity to the bible
where could anyone get knowledge of god from? ... other scriptures are just as bad if not worse and no one believes we should trust the word of people alive today.
Anyway, you are in good company and in a good place ... try to avoid confrontations until your new worldview sinks in and becomes a part of you and rant away here when you need to
