Oh wow, intense question.
The "ah-ha" moment wasn't a singular moment at all. If you live through enough chains of moments when you wonder what the hell you're faking for in the first place...what it is you're searching for…

Interesting question - and a lot of complex (convoluted) answers...and I don't know that any one of the answers gives a complete picture, but I will try. The two components you mention:
1. Education. Oh boy, the only place I can speak from is…
No-one thinks all Americans are idiots - we are just dismayed at the level of idiocy that exists in America. We have our own idiots in Oz, of course, by somehow they don't seem anywhere near as idiotic as the American variety. I wonder why that…
This from a UK satirical newspaper, The Daily Mash:
FAT, stupid Americans with no health insurance have attacked plans to stop them dying so easily.
'Git your free healthcare givin' ass offa ma property'
Across the United States…
The sad thing is that recent polls are indicating an increasing disapproval of a public option....ugh, damn these scare tactics. They prevent Americans from making an informed decision.
It is astonishing to those of us who do not live in America, the extent to which your countrymen fear and mistrust their own government.
Kristy, those of us that do live in America don't get it either. We know that a lot of the racist…
It is astonishing to those of us who do not live in America, the extent to which your countrymen fear and mistrust their own government. It seems completely at odds with the hyper-nationalism and patriotism which co-exists with this feeling that…
I'm a shiny new member here. I don't have any idea how active I'll be here right now. I'm a member of Brights, too, and haven't been active at all in several months for various reasons. Presently I'm a full-time doctoral student and mom, which might explain that a bit.
I'm really grateful to have been directed here, whether I become a very active member or just a watcher. There are not nearly enough places -either online or irw- for us to gather and talk without somebody either telling us we're going to hell or trying to convert us. I am not a militant atheist, and others' religious status neither bothers nor offends me - so long as they don't proselytize to me. My stance on most discussions - and I try to foster it with religious folk of any persuasion - whatever is being asserted, remove [your god] from the equation, and if the assertion still stands then it's worthy of discussion. Otherwise leave me the hell alone with it. (--though, thankfully, the sign-up process assures me that I won't have to make that comment here ever! Woohoo!) The only people I don't press that matter with are my parents - for a couple of different reasons. With them, I just leave it alone pretty much.
What else? I live in a flowerpot and write in green ink - and I drink a lot of coffee.
Beyond that - I don't know what else to say at the moment. I am looking forward to interacting here. :)
Cheers~~

Please note, I did not write this - quoted from elsewhere. There is so much in this writing with which I can personally identify, it's scary.
"I grew up in a family of moderate Republicans- more George HW Bushes than George W Bushes, you know? This exposed me, as a child, to ridiculous nonsense, much of which can be seen in the political email… Continue
