Hey Phil!
I've been trying to hook up with an active Atheist group in SA, unfortunately I haven't found any. I'm currently located in JHB were I thought there were a few Atheists groups but had a shock of my life when I met Christian Marxists group at a Communist Convention since I presumed that maybe among the Communists I might encounter people of reason.
As a serious black South African Atheist with reasonable understanding of science and Darwinism in particular. My world outlook is fundamentally based on science and reason. But as you would expect this has by default alienated me from many fellow South Africans-especially my black brothers and sisters. With my limited understanding of evolution I have tried to win over a few of them but have failed dismally and often been labeled the 'Anti-Christ' or 'Satanist'(I also end up being a label of their insecurities and fears). These people have been programmed to respond in a certain fixed way to any idea that my threaten their ludicrous beliefs-mainly by vilifying the opponent.
As a lecturer in one of the private colleges in SA I always use my position to plant the seed of doubt to my students but I always feel like I'm 'sowing the seed of doubt on a solidified gravel plantation', the extent of religious indoctrination in South Africa makes me wanna believe those Skeptics who consider Africa as 'the dark continent' and that it will continue to be a victim of rape and plunder by the Western colonialists and neo-colonialists.
The end of Apartheid was the 'removal of the economic chains from our necks' and 'putting them back on our feet'. No politician has lamented about the other chain, the worse of the chains-the mental chain-religious dogma being the fundamental construct of that chain.
Hope to have more correspondence with you.
Kind regards
Zeb
