Is the crude oil that we drill for, extract and convert into fuel the end product of thousands of millenia of decaying organic matter or is it formed through a different, independent geologic…Continue

Just a thought; African pre-adolescent male circumcision is quite barbaric too, as you may gather from reading Nelson Mandela's description of his own experience with the ritual in 'Long Walk to Freedom'. Every year, there are lots of…

Valentine's Day, The Olympics and The Monarchy

It would be an innocent-enough question to ask me how I'm celebratingValentine's Day (or Christmas or Easter, for that matter). Every year, you can't help getting used to the build-up immediately after New Yearto this all-important day to express affection for your loved one (ortwo, or seventy, depending on your Jihad aspirations). The stores haveswitched their displays from holly and glowing snowmen to red,heart-shaped helium-filled balloons and bouquets of roses. In theNorthern hemisphere…See More

I do not see how the origin of oil has any bearing on the existence of God. The grand God of All Creation has been reduced to a puny god of the gaps. However, the elimination of yet another gap will not keep God in his coffin.

Abiotic oil is a great topic for the entire right, religious or otherwise :D Oil is one of the arguments against YEC, and abiotic oil gives an argument around old oil, and allows oil to be young. Abiotic oil also opposses the conservation and…

I disagree, I don't think this topic sounds anything like creationist non-sense, though it could have done without the mention of creationism and atheism. I felt confused by that, too. But I'm glad someone took the time to talk about an…

Thank you for your reply. I don't use PNAS in very much of my masters research - it doesn't cover the evolutionary biology stuff as well as TREE or some of the others. But I wouldn't expect it to - journal get specific for a reason…

Raised Hindu, I was an atheist by the time I was thirteen after learning about evolution. At sixteen, I attended a tent crusade by a fundamentalist preacher who prayed for the sick. I was mesmerised at the supposed healings and the sheer fun and…

To feed or not to feed indeed... Suffice it to say that I came to the conclusion that there couldn't be a god a little over two decades ago when I was about your age. For someone who's been pondering and championing the secular cause for…

I think his very sarcastic remark and implication is referring to your tone. It's a tone we've come to expect from creationist trolls on this site. You ask excessive amounts of rhetorical questions. Many of those have the feel of setting…

There's a danger to confusing agendas that may obstruct scientific discovery. There's the left vs. right agenda, the atheist vs. religious one and the green vs. economic one, to name a few. Each inevitably accuses the other of academic…

No problem. The YECers jump through hoops and grasp at straws to prove their claims and just keep failing. There is evidence throughout many, many different fields of science which refute their claims, not just one.

Yes, I did. It is not widely known that Toronto is the centre--as opposed to 'center', which this spellcheck prefers--of the known universe and very difficult for us Vancouverites to accept (hehe, thanks for catching that moment of levity…

lol, did you just suggest Toronto is the centre of the universe? "The known universe is certainly not a sphere 6,000 light-years in diameter with our little solar system at its centre...like Toronto."

Profile Information

About Me
A mid-40's native South African of Indian heritage, I attended college in the USA, returned to work in South Africa and now reside in Vancouver, Canada. After studying chemical engineering initially, I graduated in economics and math but am presently attempting to earn an accounting designation of some sort.

My interests and hobbies include squash, tennis, scuba, golf and flying light aircraft though I've yet to be able to afford the latter for the past several years. I consider myself well-read with a growing thirst for knowledge.

I'm relatively easy-going until invited to subscribe to other peoples' religions. Converted at the age of 16 to Christianity from Atheism from a Hindu upbringing, I rebelled against the faith after 5 years and have never looked back. My immediate family is born-again, fundamentalist Christian who interprets the bible literally. Except for well-wishes on my birthday, they've all but disowned me.

I'm loath to describe myself as something I'm not, for example atheist or, non-theist. For years, I had been classified as non-White in racially-segregated South Africa as if being White was the standard against which to be measured. A vacuum rather than theism is my point of departure. I set my bar far higher than superstition. On matters of philosophy and belief, I consider myself an inquisitive and skeptical intellectual.

My sense is that we're unable to destroy a planet that has been evolving for billions of years. It's unlikely that we'll snuff out all forms of life no matter how much we pollute our environment and those that remain will continue to evolve. It's arrogant to conclude that we're the ultimate level of intelligence attainable. Just consider, for example, the genetic flaw that is our propensity for superstition.

Neeven,
Welcome to Atheist Nexis!
I looked at your profile. I imagine that you have a lot of stories to tell!
One way to get to know people is to join discussion groups, and get involved in some of the forum topics.
There are hundreds of discussion groups. They are what we make of them. Given your background, you might be interested in Conversations in Race, Ethnicity and Culture - or at least have a valuable perspective that comes from experience.

I live in that "other Vancouver", smaller and more provincial, but with a few charms of it's own.

Anyway, welcome!

Daniel
