"Perhaps there can be a new scholarly field dedicated to what it is to be Jewish, that way it wouldn't be simply a matter of religious nor secular authority telling people about it. I'd call it Judiology."
"The word temple is far superior to the word church.
It also obviously refers to a building, which dismisses a doubt many theists have, for example: "if atheists have a church doesn't that mean they believe in god, also where did i put my…"
"In the U.S. humanism isn't really a political association. However, I will note that there are humanists who reject much of modern atheism due to the elevation of the status of the human over all other life and an exaggerated notion of human…"
"There already is one: Unitarian Universalist Church is officially agnostic and it's atheist friendly. It proposes that people should define their own spirituality and that questions matter more than answers. It requires no doctrinal assertion…"
"I agree completely. Being that a Church is a religious institution, and we non-theist are not studying or praising a deity, I see no reason to use theist ideas for labeling. We are way smarter then that. I prefer " House of Logic " LOL"
"Yeah, I like refuge, but much more than religion, the word temple inspires awe. A temple is a grand structure with a grand purpose. There is no reason for people to think that without religion, there is no awe or awesomeness in our lives."
"I agree. The terms, forum, agora, institute, and academy sound good to me, but as you say someone will accuse us of being a religion. However, by avoiding all appearance of religion and even a name for ourselves, we invite others to say that we are…"
"I like the idea of using terms like "agora" and "forum", as they definitely separate Atheism from from Theism.
Here's the problem I have with the whole idea: No matter what name you put on it, Theists will see them as…"
Greetings, Nathan! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus in a year. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.
Thanks. Actually I went to visit my dad never actually lived there. I also felt there was this type of white and black tension in that area as well. I'm too used to southern californias ]more] appreciation for diversity lol.
Thanks. I'm not familiar with "Atheist Nation". If by chance you are referring to "Atheist Nexus" chat, I wouldn't know, since I never do chat. And there are plenty of breakdowns as is without IM. It's plenty easy to get aggravated on Facebook.
Hi Nathan, please consider joining my new group HERCULANEUM: A PLACE FOR MEN. Herculaneum is a group where men can discuss and explore the ideas, goals, demands, ethics, sexuality, and nature of manhood and masculinity. It is a place where we are free to be ourselves, and discuss the issues most important to our identities as men.
I have already started two discussions to get us going: How do we define manhood in the 21st century? and Rites of Passage: A Lost Ritual?.
This is a private group, and discussions can be viewed by members only. Membership is open to men only. Please check it out.
There is a chat line. There are too many things here. Blogs, groups, chat, discussions. Too many choices. I'd rather it were more like Tribe, where groups (tribes) have energetic discussions. I don't like chat that much because I'd rather think and compose a post, rather than interact in real time. The real time chat tends to be shallow.
