Hi Nate, I thought about this post a couple hours last night and woke up with it on my mind, so I thought I better try to put something together. Stuff sticks in my head, I hate walking away without taking a jab at sputtering something out. Thanks...
Nathan. I salute you for now having an open mind and heart regardin this issue. I am also a preachers son and relate to you with regard to the emotional trauma all this must put you through.
Seems that free speech was easily forgotten when people tried voicing opinions contrary to the Bush administration. I was in such a protest group, and saw how dissenters were kept 500 feet away from every function Bush conducted, but those who sup...
I think that one of the problems in this country is that our legal system has become a system of behavioral micromanagement. We're taught by society not to care what is moral or immoral, but what is legal and illegal. More progressive nations's la...
This is a difficult issue, because the arguments on both sides are valid and rather emotional. But the attitude that "my right to say whatever I want trumps your desire to be free from harassment" is a symptom of the excessive glorification of ind...
An appellate court recently overturned the $5 million dollar verdict against my family for picketing at a soldier's funeral in Maryland. In spite of the civil jury's decision that certain torts had been violated by my family, the appellate court d...
"Am I really expected to believe that every member of the audience in those matches went home and put on white hoods and burned crosses..."
This is a bit of a false dichotomy.
Racism doesn't only come in the "in your face, cross burning" variety...
Despite decades of progress, the concepts of race and ethnicity continue to influence lives. Let's discuss the roles & effects that these concepts play in our lives, what they mean, & how to live together in a diverse society and world.
Dawkins does put things pretty bluntly in The Blind Watchmaker. He has stated elsewhere (wish I could find it) about the meaning and joy he finds in life.
When I left Christianity, I was so caught up in all my new ideas and readings - that the rea...
Well, shoot. I just asked somewhere else if you watched Richard Dawkins videos. lol... Here is my answer.
We are fortunate to have the ability recognize our own existence. It is how you deal with what you have and the choices you make that really...
It is natural to try to tack this sort of an explanation on things that are so complex. It seems to satisfy, but it doesn't really satisfy, you know? Like junk food. I think it is particularly difficult to shake those thoughts when it has been tau...
I recently moved to Canada to be with a woman I met. I was married for 19 years and raised 4 children. I worked in the printing industry for 28 years and now I drive a taxi in a small town in southeast British Columbia while working on a book about my family. I am the estranged son of the infamous Fred Phelps. After years of searching, studying and questioning, I have released myself from the mythology of religion.
Are there any groups of atheists, that gather in our province, on a regular basis?

Loved your episode of Chariots of Iron and am super excited for your book. Very interesting! I've been fascinated by your story for years, since I first read Jon Bell's "Addicted to Hate" manuscript on the internet. Can't wait for your book!
Nathan! I just wanted you to know that on reading one of your pieces, is the reason I decided to join AN. Thank you and I hope to interact with you more very soon. :-)
Excellent. Why don't you private message me with your email address and schedule, and I'll send something around to everyone so we can nail something down that works. Also, if you have ideas about the best way to record/host this kind of thing, I'd love to hear them.
I'm going to put out something on my blog so my readers can submit questions for us. Once we set up a time, I'll announce it there and you can let your peeps know too :)
Hi Nate. I've been talking with two other cult-leader kid survivors. If you'd be interested in participating, I wanna get a round-table discussion conference call or live chat between us, that we can each host on our own blogs after or whatever. Maybe answer some common questions about cults in general, and tell aspects of our individual stories. It took me so long to find any of you, I think it would be really great if the other kids of cult leaders (or just fundy kids) can find our stories a bit easier.
Hey Nate, I recently just listened to your episode of Chariots of Iron. It might be my favorite episode. I thoroughly enjoy hearing your stories and I can't wait until I can read your book. I think you have a story that everyone needs to hear. Thank you for sharing!
Nathan - I read your speech from the Atheist Convention..it was inspirational and I was so moved by it that I couldn't help but shed a few tears. I have experienced the ugliness and hate of religion too, but certainly not to the extent you have. BTW - your smile in your profile picture is absolutely radiant! Looks like you have found the peace and happiness Rosemary wished for you in her comment.
That's pretty interesting and I'm fairly sure there are some drugs involved with the developements of such theories.

You may live in one of those rare places that aren't hospitable to most wildlife, the sort of a place where only a human being (and their four-legged hangers-on, like rats and coyotes) would, or could, willingly reside.

I stood up last night at a Central Forum. AA New York only holds 4 of these each year in the U.S., and this weekend it was in my home town. I stood up and identified myself as the GSR for the Atheists and Spirituality group, and I know I heard a f...
this is also why I support the liberal idea of preventing crime by helping people slums and impoverished communities rather than making harsher punishments for them.
The prevention of crime is more important then the "revenge" aspect of punishment
Pascal came from a culture steeped in Christianity, its influence, its dominance, and its fear-mongering. Science in his time was hardly in its infancy, and the brand of rational thought we enjoy now was a stark rarity in his time. Anyone in Pasca...
(In =P) my experience, people who know that their bad behavior will go unpunished are more likely to act badly in the future.
ok, but that is rather childish thinking. I don't think that a lot of people here are like that. We are all here pursuin...
Why do we exist?
As far as I can tell, we're here simply as the result of a series of fortunate accidents. Life arose on this planet by natural processes and humans are just one of the myriads of experimental life forms that evolution produced.
To my experience, people who know that their bad behavior will go unpunished are more likely to act badly in the future. We still have the ability to observe the effects of cause and effect and this does effect our behavior.
What you've described...
Rather than asking myselfself "What if there is a God?" I ask myself "What sensible reasons do I have to suspect there might be a God?" The answer, of course, is none.
I find this simple process usefull when analyzing other propositions, like "Wh...
As far as we can tell the universe is a closed system. There are numerous theories on parallel or multiverses but they are far too speculative at this point. It is difficult to comprehend that something so vast be closed. I can not identify a loca...
