I am sorry to say, I think that your relationship will not work out, and I think it is better to end it sooner rather than later. Family is obviously important to him, as are their opinions about him and about who he is dating. This, I think, will…

Note: I make no claim to be good at this. Pierce needs to be honest and open with his family and himself. If you are the person he wants to be with then it is his responsibility to stand up for you. This is his problem not yours. My wife is a…

Thanks Everyone for the comments. A small update on the issue is I have been talking to his father a lot and although he seems to not struggle at all in his faith I actually think I am getting somewhere being accepted. His dad loves me actually!!…

I would like to get opinions on this issue. I am a 22 year old atheist and in good reason pretty certain, like all of us, that religion is absolutely incorrect for many reasons. However, I met a guy who is more agnostic than Christian with his thoughts but is incapable to be honest with himself and admit he is not orthodox Christian. For these reasons the separation of our beliefs have worked between us. When we discuss things we actually get somewhere. I actually understand his ideas as he…See More

About Me
I have been an atheist for around 4 years now. When I was 8 years old I asked my Sunday school teacher "who created god" and she ignored me. Then I asked again and again and would not accept no for an answer. She placed me in time out for 5 minutes without any explanation of what I had done wrong. As I got older I realized what I had done wrong, think for myself! I stopped going to church, however I continued to be religious on "my own terms", which is ironic because it now is the most annoying thing to me about religions. I doubted religion my whole life but never knew that anything else was possible because it is jammed down our throats as children. I did some research myself and the disgust for religion has grown stronger ever sense. I have never been afraid of what others think in regards to my belief, however I have also stood alone in it and it is pretty frustrating. It's good to know that there are people just like me... rational!

Hi Miranda,

If you are still at the University of Indianapolis, then you are only a couple of blocks away from me. I know of a number of atheists who live on the southside of Indianapolis.

If you get a chance, you should check out your local Center For Inquiry. We are fortunate (blessed?) enough to have what is possibly the best CFI center in the country, perhaps even the world. It is directly on the downtown canal between New York St. and Vermont St., on the west side of the canal. CFI, if you're not familiar, is a secular humanist organization, and we are all freethinkers, with the vast majority consider ourselves atheists. We support education and free inquiry into all subjects and function as a social club for atheists.

There is also a sub-group called CFI 20/30s that meets most sundays at 1:00pm at the center. It's targeted for atheists in their 20s and 30s and may be what you're looking for.

Hi Miranda, thanks for adding me as a friend. I read your profile and understand the frustration of going it alone. Indianapolis is actually the site of the only other church that my father thinks has a shot at heaven. We traveled there on several occasions to have "bible conferences" with that church. I think it was called the Westbrook New Testament Baptist Church.

Welcome to AN fellow Hoosier!
You're not alone... but almost!

I personally know 3 other atheists here, but they're few and far between. Like you, I didn't know for a very long time that atheism was an option -- because of the brainwashing and the fact that everyone I ever knew was a believer. Now I've never been happier!

I've been trying to get a few of us together for a discussion group. If you're interested, see my post in the Indiana Atheists group.

Either way -- glad to have you here!

Well, take advantage of the A|N then. You'll find a lot of like-minded people here to discuss things with. Join groups, make friends, blog, chat, engage in discussions, it's all here. And none of those darned fundies to get in the way.
