Mims H. Carter replied to John Miele's discussion 'Anyone have any examples of consistantly benevolent deities?' in the group Recovering from Religion
The Hindu deity Avalokiteshvara comes to mind.  The buddhist diety know as Kuan Yin in China, Kanon in Japan comes to mind.  Kuan Yin is always a female diety, and embodies the buddhist concept of karuna, usually translated as compassion.…

Mims H. Carter replied to Aly Jiselle's discussion 'Black & Gay & Atheist... in Mississippi. Yikes!!!' in the group Mississippi Atheists
Aly, Yikes is right.  It is hard enough to be any one of these in Mississippi, much less all three.  Have courage, reach out to the communities that support you.  I remember Richard Wright was asked about being black, gay, and…

Brianna, Your attitude and actions in all of this really impresses me. Not for the first time, I see a young person acting much more maturely than her parents. You did the right thing deleting your mother from your facebook account. As you said, it…

Recovering from Religion

Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion.See More

Mims H. Carter commented on Chuck's group 'Irreligiosophy'
I hurt their feelings by giving them a poor rating on iTunes. Check some of the older episodes, late '09 and earlier this year for the development of the whole thing. They even interview me a couple of months ago. I actually like Leighton and…

About Me
atheist, humanist, biologist, kayaker, martialist, didgeridooer, worst guitar player in the gulf south. I had a landscaping business and retail plant nursery specializing in water gardens and native plants until Katrina. My business and home were two blocks from the Gulf and were wipe out. I divorced my wife soon afterwards. I now work for a non-profit and I am enrolling in a masters of education program in the Public Understanding of Science through the University of New York in Buffalo and the CFI.

I was raised in a Catholic environment but my parents had a great library and I have been an atheist since I was 13. This does not mean I am totally free of false, unsupportable, or wholly whacked out beliefs, but I constantly try to pry them loose and get rid of them.

What is a good time for us to call? We are in limbo between duty stations right now and we have a slightly later schedule than normal...if you are on skype, our ID is : foxhole_atheist

I will probably call you from there so I can stay "mysterious"

We are in town (Hattiesburg) for a while, would you like to help us launch our podcast?? You can contact us at foxholeatheistfriends@gmail.com. Or we can meet for lunch in my hometown of Long Beach after I get my son his first haircut at Ray's where I got my first one 30 years ago.

BTW, I have been an atheist more or less since I was 4 (I have an interesting story behind that) and a very open and brazen atheist since I was 11. Rebellion gave me the confidence to be open. Teenage hormones and what not, you know how it is.

Just finished listening to your interview on Irreligiosophy on the way back from R&R. I was kinda drifitng in and out of dreamland. One thing I gotta say having grown up in Long Beach: I tend to use an unnatural, mocking Southern accent when commenting or immitating ignorant people... Because, that is how I came to know ignorance...not only that, but my first duty station was Fort Riley, Kansas and I saw more Confederate Flags and heard more fake country accents from the ingorant population there than on the Coast. I suppose I was lucky living on the Coast which is arguably more progressive than the rest of the state. Also, if you want a first hand account of Katrina, ask my wife (Kimberly Michele), she stayed in Biloxi during the storm. thanks for you helpful endeavors.

Just by chance I listened to the episode of Irreligiosophy where they read your iTunes review. Now I understand. I like their show, it's juvenile and crude at times, but the format is like having a conversation with friends. I find their perspective interesting, because they are ex-mormons, since I live on the periphery of mormon-central. I tend to prefer shows like theirs. I also listen to Chariots of Iron, Atheist News, and the Non-prophets which all have similar formats. I'm very impressed with their knowledge of religion (on all of these podcasts) since I know relatively little about the bible. It amazes me how much time and effort they all put in to something they don't get paid for.

Studying aquatic insects has a lot of advantages, I got to spend a lot of time wading around in streams, on the other hand, I spent a lot of time cold and wet too.

So, what exactly did you do that made such a strong impression on the guys at Irreligiosophy? I've only been listening to them for a short while and I'm catching up on their episodes, and you seem to figure prominently in many of the ones I've heard.

Mims, I don't know Walter Pett, so it appears the weirdness ends. It's not surprising I haven't heard of him though, my emphasis was on aquatic insects, specifically dragonflies. Bees are an interesting area to be in now though, with bees being in such dire straights (colony collapse disorder, mites, etc.).

It is truly a small world! Doc Pippen was my Master's advisor (when I had a botany orientation, before changing to entomology) and the chairman of the Department. I TA'd for him in Biol. 102 for about 3 years. Last I heard about him, he was in Malaysia at Sunway University (WMU and Sunway have some sort of relationship). I would imagine he is retired by now.

That's OK Arnab. Much quicker than the second coming of Christ. Wouldn't want to be hanging by the balls waiting for that to happen.
