A dollar

I was once called a "sucker" by a very rich fellow for giving a dollar to a homeless man. I replied “the day I summarily judge a man as worthless for being poor, I will have lost something far more valuable than a dollar”.MiguelSee More

For reason's sake

Posted on July 2, 2010 at 11:46pm 1 Comment

The voids of our knowledge have always been filed with religious and mystical explanations and although we have only began to understand our world, science has done a far greater service than shaman or clergymen in elevating our understanding of the planet and the universe we live in.

There is a view that is often advanced by mystics that the rigor of the sciences stifles imagination…

Older but not necessarily wiser

Experience provides an opportunity to learn but it does not guarantee that anything is learned from it.

Much like a pupil that is merely present for class, being present during life’s events, does not by itself guarantee that one will have learned anything.

Few are the people that grow both older and wiser. Most people simply grow older and more irrational.

We all differ in our ability to participate in the lives of others but we all have the opportunity, the choice, to participate in the lives of others more fully than we do now.

And yet we don’t do it out of fear, out of ambivalence to the suffering of others and because we tell ourselves that we are too busy and our own lives too messed to help others. Yet, all that it takes is to reach out without fear and to care, a simple embrace, to share food, and to…

I was spared a religious upbringing in that sense. So have never yet encountered nuns only observed from afar, as it were.

Then again, unlike it's ineffectually scented wooden-flaked homonym, I find popery offenseive and it gives me a rash.

Thanks. I got the graphic from Sam Harris's Reason project. - All the red-lines represent contradictions in the bible. (frankly it looks better on the poster - the Ning uploader crops and magnifies images)

But I like abstract qualities of images, so it appealed to my inner aesthetic and atheistic reasoning.

Oh well I was sent to church. Evidently it didn't take. ;-)

I never had any faith to loose really but I did not doubt that god existed, so insofar as I recognised my own doubts about religion in general I still thought God existed (to the point where I though he would be annoyed if I attend church - like by walking through the doors I'd be appearing under a magnifying glass carry an illuminated sign: I DON'T BELIEVE IN YOU)

It seems a bit ridiculous now but I put it down to a young brian grappling with ideas it was quite sure how to file. So it sort of hadn't occurred to me that god he could probably tell that if I was stood outside of the church too (If I believed he could see me anywhere) nor that by doubts would ultimately lead to including his very existence. It was all very one sided: I didn't feel I had any faith at all. Talking to the weather was doing nothing for me. So I sort of affirmed doubt while believing in something I didn't yet know was false.) And that's how things were up and until I got into my late teens, then once I began actually asking questions it all just fell away.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 5 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
