I am a planting design expert living in Naples with a must-read blog and newspaper column in the Naples Daily News. Be there, be square.
And I remember EXACTLY when I realized that faith is, well, something you accept as fact for which there isn't any evidence. As a kid I was very active in the Episcopal Church, and when I was 13 I was in the confirmation classes. I had a lot of trouble with the notion of a trinity, and father Duell was very patient with me and explained over and over. Finally in exasperation he said: "it's just something that you believe'.
I didn't even want to believe. And that ended the story.
Later, I converted to Judaism as part of a general searching, and then met my wife, who is Jewish, and I was very very active here locally. But over time I came to realize that the notion of 'god' just wasn't working for me. I even tried generalizing, sorta like the Unitarians, but it doesn't work for me.
And that's that.

Same thing happened to me only Catholic. I kid people by telling them they if I hadn't been sent to 'Catacisum' I might still be a believer. I honed my critical thinking skills there. I guess there are a lot of us.
