Um no...that's not what I'm saying at all. Female genital mutilation is an entirely different issue. As you say, it is disgusting and repulsive. I definitely agree that men should have the choice to be circumcised or to not be circumcised.…
To compare female genital mutilation to the circumcision of newborn boys is horrible, in my opinion. It's a COMPLETELY different issue, with *so* many more aspects involved.
That said, I do not fully support the circumcision of newborn boys,…
You bring up an excellent point, Josh. Although there really is nothing morally wrong with eating meat, animals do NOT have to be treated the way they are currently being treated in major meat-packing plants. They endure nothing short of torture,…
I understand what you're saying, Dallas, and I agree that the word deserve definitely could imply some kind of divine law or karmic nature. However, as a passionate atheist, I did not mean it that way. What I should have said is that humans…
I'm in my first year of a two-year Master of Social Work program, and I'm absolutely loving it! : ) I was raised agnostic and have experimented with different spiritual systems and religions, but I have always returned to atheism as a result of numerous doubts. Fortunately, logical and critical thinking helped me return to the "dark side." I am a proud atheist, secular humanist, progressive, and vegan. I am passionate about learning, listening to music, singing, dancing, reading, studying languages, watching movies, photography, watching meteor showers, snuggling with my cats, spending time with my friends and family, volunteering, writing (usually in the academic sense), conducting research...this is already a long list, so I'll leave it there : ) Hopefully I'll be able to add "traveling" to that list at some point; I'd love to see the world. I'm always interested in meeting different kinds of people, so whether you'd like to share a different perspective or to have a chat about something totally random, just let me know!
Greetings, Meg! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus since Sept. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.
That is very cool. The field of the psychology or neurology behind the brain "on religion" or the "spiritual brain" is a field that I see a lot of potential in, in the near future. We know so little about the brain as it stands, especially why certain people are so religious or spiritual and others are simply not. Have you ever read Dean Hammer's the "God Gene"? It is a fascinating book that deals with this topic.
Me? My plans are a lot less organized and laid out than yours seem to be. I personally am about finished with my time at a Community College and am about to transfer to Florida State University. The problem is that I have no idea of what I will major in. Not even close to an idea. :( I have a ton of interests, but nothing I would want to pursue as a career unfortunately. So, hopefully, in time I will have some more solid ideas of my area of study. Right now, though, everything is up in the air. Of course, some sort of hard science is something I'd prefer but do I have the brains for that? I'm not sure. :)
So, Why cognitive psychology/cognitive neuroscience? Does this have any relevance to your atheism? What do you want to study in this field exactly? Curious.
Hello! Good Good. Just looking for friends around my area and I added someone who had you as a friend so I decided to add you too! Birmingham is pretty far from Tallahassee though. But whatever!
